KATU - Portland, OR : Is this a cougar that was spotted in a Salem back yard? | Local & Regional | KATU.com - Portland New

This is definitely NOT a cougar or a bobcat! My guess is either a fat house cat or crossbred cat.

KATU - Portland, OR : Oregon considers mileage tracking system for road tax | Transportation | KATU.com - Portland News, S

One concern that I have is how would the State keep track of driving you do out of state. What proof would they require? I am retired and on a low fixed income. Luckily, I am able to spend the winter in Arizona and I live in my RV and travel through the other states the rest of the year. I only spend one to two months within Oregon and Oregon is my official state of residence and I pay Oregon income taxes. How will they handle my mileage? Also, it seems only fair to tax the millions of visitors to our state. A gas tax does this. A mileage based system wouldn't.

Not true. Oregon's current average gasoline price is $4.17 while Idaho's is $3.77. On top of that, look at other western states. Montana $3.73, Wyoming $3.61, Utah $3.69, Colorado $3.78, Nevada $3.93. Why are these states anywhere from $0.24 to $0.56 per gallon less? Could self serve have something to do with it?

KATU - Portland, OR : Bumpy road ahead or will bikes & cars coexist under redesign? | Local & Regional | KATU.com - Portla

I lived in Portland for 60 years. Then I moved! This is one of the reasons why. The City's plan to reduce traffic lanes to make bike lanes is stupid. This just increases traffic congestion. Why not take a sidewalk on one side of the street and dedicate this space to bikes and leave the lanes intact. It is just an insult to use car license fees to make traffic congestion worse.

I don't believe that a person could ride a motorcycle at 170 mph. Maybe 125 but not 170. It takes a lot of power to get up that fast not to mention how scary it would be.

KATU - Portland, OR : Landmark coffee stand closes over land use, building code rules | Local & Regional | KATU.com - Port

I'm reading a lot more between the lines to this story. The coffee stand is in an old gasoline station pay building. The coffee stand has been in business for 16 years. There is a $100,000 balance owing on a loan. The county threatens to shut them down but then says that they would grandfather the coffee stand in. I think the owner wasn't making any money and refinanced her business to carry her through. Now she closes the business although the county isn't forcing this issue any more and she wants to blame the county. How on earth did she even get a loan of at least $100,000 (or did she)? The coffee stand wouldn't have been able to support this kind of debt. I think she would have closed the business regardless of what the county did.

What lousy reporting! The title says two people were injured. The story says one person was injured and maybe a second one, but they aren't sure. Which is it? Get the facts. Since it was a cab that was involved, it would be of interest to know if the injured person was the driver or the passengers. The story doesn't say. "Traffic is one-way eastbound and only one lane is open" What street is involved? The story doesn't say. The author of this story needs to take a high school journalism class! Or should be fired for incompetence.

We voted against this project once but somehow the politicians ignored our wishes and are building it anyway. Now we hear that it is the most expensive transit project by mike in the US. How can they justify building a project that is the most expensive in US history?? How can they justify it when so many are out of work? How can they justify it in this recession? How can they be representing the voters? The answer to all these questions is "They can't!" but they are anyway. Vote them out on the next election!

I have never understood why motorcycle riders are not forced to obey the same rules as cars. Why are they allowed to ride in packs and tailgate? Why are they allowed to violate noise limits? They should not have special rules applied to them. It would likely have saved a life yesterday if they had traveled with more separation.

I can understand that they can't charge Terri for the kidnapping or killing of Kyron. They don't apparently have any evidence of a murder yet. I thought they had a person who was hired by Terri to murder Kaine. With him as the witness I would think they could charge her. And I still think there should be some way for the divorce to happen - especially since Oregon is a no-fault state.

This is starting to look more and more like the authorities are useless and incompetent. What a shame.

So now it must be okay for a Tri-Met driver to stop his bus anywhere and just take a dump. Hopefully he makes it past the sidewalk. Seriously, the driver had wheels. He should have delayed his route and found an appropriate bathroom. If he was sick then he should not have been at work. He used very bad judgment!

KATU - Portland, OR : TriMet proposes rate increases; disabled riders outraged | KATU.com - Portland News, Sports, Traffic

Most of you probably don't remember when Tri-Met was formed and bought the transit system from Rose City Transit. The fares were $0.10 per ride. The government was going to make transit affordable and encourage ridership. The balance was going to come out of the tax base. The Tri-Met directors are out of control. They want to create a transit system that will be the envy of the country. Unfortunately they ram through "enhancements" that are not popular and are not cost effective. Look at the rail lines.. People voted against the line to Milwaukie but they ignored that and are building it anyway. The voters in Vancouver didn't want a line to Vancouver but they are planning one anyway. The train lines cost more per person/ride and looses money so they just build more. The service is terrible. They should build a transit system that will get you to work in about the same time that you can drive and for about the same cost. (Fat chance!) The other major problem with Portland's transit system is that it totally fails for cross town trips vs into and out of downtown Portland. I was involved in planning a move for our office of 150 people. We were in downtown Portland and the rent got too high so we started looking in the suburbs and business parks around. Ultimately we determined that those who relied on public transportation would be taking 3 buses/trains and 2.5 hours to get from the east side to the west side or vice versa. A daily commute of 5 hours was just too much and we ended up staying downtown. Tri-Met sucks! By the way, how many of the directors ride Tri-Met daily? Probably none for these exact reasons.

KATU - Portland, OR : Plastics industry steps up opposition to bag ban | KATU.com - Portland News, Sports, Traffic Weather

I don't understand the thinking behind the bill. We have been able to choose "paper or plastic" in the past and generally at no additional cost to the consumer. Now along comes this bill and they want to charge us five cents for each paper bag. Why? This is just an additional cost to the consumer. Yes, we can buy fabric (polyester) bags and save the nickel but why charge us for paper? The second point is whether you prefer paper of plastic bags. I personally hate the plastic because they are slippery and the groceries don't stay in the bags unless you tie them closed. They don't hold as much so you go through 2 or 3 times as many bags as with paper. I also agree with others that paper can tear or get wet, so nothing is perfect.
