Someone, either the farmers, a storage middle-man, or the government is losing a lot of money to rotting grain, why not lose the same money by giving the grain away to starving people? The net loss is the same, but in theory propping up a non-consumer class in the short term can help turn them into consumers in the future who can pay for your excess grain. Invest in a bigger market... people who starve to death don't buy grain.

"unattractive", "gross", "yuck", "disgusted"... sure wouldn't see those terms applied to an article about women's obesity, that wouldn't be politically correct. We have to say they are "curvy" and "big and beautiful", and yet when a woman is a few sizes too small all of a sudden we start calling her gross!?! Do thin women somehow have ironclad psyche's that are impenetrable to this kind of abusive rhetoric? As a guy I find it funny how (typically) heavier women are so indignant about the supposed "health and beauty" of their weight and then wont hesitate to crap all over someone who is "too skinny."

Yes, we can continue to shirk social responsibility and end up with a 50% obesity rate, or we can try to tackle the problem and hopefully reduce it. Obviously the "Its your fault, just learn self-control" mantra, whilst true, has been an abysmal failure in modifying behavior across society at large. Its certainly not your fault (I believe it is partially McDonald's fault, but that's another discussion) , but we can be part of the solution by collectively supporting healthier choices even though we ourselves aren't part of the problem. Personally I eat maybe one candy bar a month (if that), and would be happy to pay double the price knowing that it may be influencing the blimps out there to reach for a healthier option.

While what you say is partially true, if the worst food people ate was potatoes, wheat, corn and beans we would be orders of magnitude healthier. Its the 32oz soda, the big mac, and the hyper-sugared deserts that are really killing us. Its difficult to eat 2000 calories of potatoes, but its not that hard to do with ultra high calorie processed foods.

I'm usually all about personal responsibility and personal freedom, but large sectors of our society are clearly too irresponsible to manage their own weight, and its costing all of us. I am all for "sin taxes" on sugared beverages, sweets, fast food etc., as well as draconian school lunch rules... anything to change the social mechanisms that foster rampant obesity. This is getting ridiculous!!
