Sometimes the stunt casting worked, such as when they cast Andre Braugher as Iago opposite Avery Brooks Othello. Sometimes it was a disaster, such as Patrick Stewart as Othello against an all black cast. I also felt that Francelle Dorn was a weak actress who they kept in the company simply for diversity. His concept was that it had to be done by an all male cast, with burly hairy men playing the female roles because "Audiences just won't accept the sexism in the play any more." I saw it when it opened Christmas of 1981 and several times since. It never fails to impress me and gets better each time. Setting aside its politics, its dramatic two act structure is extremely well done. If you never see the second part after intermission, it ends happily and the Russian Revolution looks like a triumph. Act two shows the disappointment and disillusion when the Revolution fails. I disagree with the author about Louise Bryant's feminist views being anachronistic. Within Reed and Bryant's circle these views were much in vogue. Contemporary writings show this. And I think Nicholson's performance as O'Neill is one of his best. Oliver Stone has written many great screenplays and directed several excellent films, but "Platoon" didn't work for me because it fell prey to the problem of many "anti-war" movies. By showing war, you cannot help but glamorize it. In "Platoon" you light your cigarette with a Zippo and then torch a village. You shotgun marijuana hits through your rifle barrel with your platoon buddies. And when you die, you are shot with your arms outstretched, martyr-like, in glorious slow motion. "Platoon" is like VietnamLand at a theme park. "Full Metal Jacket" is the ultimate Vietnam film for me. Its black humor keeps the war from becoming romanticized. The theme began to emerge in the seventies. Paul Schrader wrote tw wonderful screenplays that touched on the theme: "Taxi Driver" and the lesser known, but very powerful "Rolling Thunder." The theme is subtle in "Taxi Driver," just the patch on Travis's army jacket and the reference in his job interview at the beginning.
