Well I think we can say for that that his wife having a birthday which coincides with their day out to BC is obviously not the real reason behind that trip; it must be testing potentially faulty vision in a responsible manner.

To be fair to DC (and I can't believe I have just typed such), it is highly possible, perhaps even probable, that his son slept for most or all of the journey.

I have no sympathy with the "thought processes" behind going on the journey in the first place though and the subsequent cavalier attitude for the rules and straightforward transparency to our PM and the public.

The only quibble I have with your account is that you left out the delightful coincidence of the tourist trip to Barnard Castle being on the day of his wife's birthday; just fancy that!
