For a lot of people, Derpy stood as a sign of a connection between the fans and the show staff. Therefore, when she hadn't been showing up, people worried that the show was losing one of the things that got a lot of people into the show in the first place - feeling connected with the show and the community. When she appeared again, that worry was quickly dispelled, leading to the current celebration. Note how his methods of obtaining gems get more and more demanding as he gains more of them, and he becomes less and less reluctant to give away his jewels as he gets rid of them. For me, at least, it's an indication that there is an in-universe reason why he seems a little out-of-character. I thought the entire point of parody series was to make characters different from how they are in the main show as a way to poke fun at the show. Honestly, I much prefer FiW. I have given Mentally Advanced several tries, but too much of it's humor tends to stem from quick one-shot jokes (often involving sex, racism, or other shock topic humor-shortcuts), while FiW builds the jokes into the plotline more, using the strange characterizations they've given everyone. (Plus Pinkie and Spike's accents in MA annoy me, but that's more of a personal thing.) Now maybe they've gotten better about this, but if MA is as consistent as you say it is, I'm facing continuity lockout for not being able to make it through the first few episodes. And honestly, I doubt any parody series would make it through the pre-readers, because parodies and fanfiction tend to take different tones, and one does not easily translate into the other.
