It’s called Limited Liability. But this is where if there was a legal requirement for all these companies to take out insurance in a properly funded guarantee scheme we wouldn’t have this problem.

A large number of the builders responsible have liquidated. There is nowhere to get the monies required to fully rectify the situation. Central government has a moral duty to pay for any shortfall to complete these repairs. It has been politicians and the officers of central and local government that have allowed a lowering of legislated standards and have not correctly enforced those that were in place. A properly legislated building guarantee scheme should have been put in place, however an excessive laissez-faire philosophy seems to be at the route of much that is wrong with U.K. business practice. This country is particularly bad at holding people to account. In Italy for example the officials of the inspectorate and supervising engineers would have long been locked up for criminal neglect.

Since the so called (often minimal or dubious) ‘improvements in safety, energy-efficiency, emissions, convenience, comfort and cost’ can all be realised easily by alternative driver assistance technologies, the argument of the author for AVs is simply deceptive waffle.

Please can we have articles from people capable of making sound honest arguments and having genuine expertise in future?

AV is an unnecessary technology in search of a justifiable application.

In another post, frankmorcom recommended the report on this topic below:

'A Resurgence of the Regions: rebuilding innovation capacity across the whole UK.' by Richard A.L. Jones, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Sheffield -

I can confirm his recommendation. It is well worth reading. I fear it’s contents are too subtle and inconvenient for our leaders.

I flatter myself that I am not that stupid:

‘A bigot is a person who is intolerant of opinions, lifestyles, or identities that are different from his or her own.’

I think your foul language and calls to clear off reasonably count as intolerance. Your contributions simply stink up the place.

Great idea; we can develop all these new industries........and then our get-rich-quick City can sell them out to our competitors!

Why not liberalise hard drugs while you are at it? Your intolerant response to And-con’s reasonable post shows what an unwelcome bigot you are.
