Big Hollywood : Today's Open Thread

My belief with movies has always been such when it comes to sequals. If the sequal is a continuation of the original that was meant to be then you get a good series, i.e. the original star wars series and lord of the rings. In other words all of the individual movies where envisioned as one body of work and put together so. Where you get the sorry sequals are from great movies that were meant to stand on their own, Matrix and pirates. That was always my problem with those sequals are they feel like they are just tacked onto the first as opposed to furthering the story in a meaningful way.

Big Hollywood : What Country Music Looks Like in 2010

I've never really bought into all of these new country acts out right now, they've just all seemed so "fake" to me. Like what David was saying a few posts ago, I think they all try to act more like celebrities rather than good ole folks making the music that they love.

Valid comparison. Both are groups of like-minded people gathered together to voice their opinions. If one is to be discredited for it's lack of representation of various ethnic groups, then so should the other.

Big Government : Reason.tv: 21: Is it Time to Lower the Drinking Age?

I concede that the major problem with any of these situations is that the problem does not lie with the casual users, but with the abusers who let these substances effect their lives as well as those around them. As you state, there are people out there that would stop drinking if it were again made illegal, but still there would be a group of people who would continue no matter what. After all I know numerous people who were going to stop smoking when cigarettes where more than $2.50 a pack. Substance abuse is a very hard thing to combat because most abusers follow the attitude of, "I'm gonna get high no matter what." Meaning that in worst case scenarios they would give up their job, family, friends, freedom, and sometimes their own lives for that next buzz. This was my basis for the statement about stoners. Perhaps it would have been more accurate to peg them as, "Substance abusers."

So just because I comment on how much is spent under this administration it is to be assumed that I don't care about what's been done in the past? For your information I do know how much was spent under bush, but how does that excuse obama from taking what bush did and shouting, "Light the last four boilers!" Are you trying to say that since bush spent more than any president before him then obama has to surpass him to continue the trend? The way I see it bush made mistakes with regards to the budget, but obama has propagated those mistakes. Besides, bush's spending has limited bearings on obama's spending so to bitch about his spending is still irrelevant.

But yet that still leaves the problem of women doesn't it? I mean afterall they are emotional creatures who don't always act rationally when presented with a situation regardless of their age. What is your plan for them since you seem to have all the solutions? /sarc

You know I don't think I can knock him for this comment because this is my rebuttal to anyone that tries to say, "Well we might as well legalize drugs because if we continue to make them illegal then people will continue to get them from nasty people cooking them in their basement, but if we make it legal then we can make sure they are safely manufactured in a sterile environment." I usually use it to cynically point out the fact that people always seem to wanna draw a line that makes no sense, either make drugs and alchohal illegal and deal with the fact that you'll have to drop more revenue in police and prisons, or make them all legal and put up with all of the unemployed stoners that nobody wants working for them.

Agreed. I was an Engineering major in college so I never dove that deep into economics in a money sense, but I've found that a basic understanding of numbers as well as a dash of common sense completely refutes everything that this administration tries to preach will fix the economy. "We have to spend our way out of this recession," was always my favorite. I have a counter question, "How many times can you subtract from zero til you come up with a positive?"

Big Journalism : Muslim Students Declare Trinity University's 'Year Of Our Lord' Must Go

A friend and I discussed this very concept. Our thoughts were that many students in college have an underlying desire to be a part of something greater than themselves, kind of the whole idea that it's better to be a part of a group than to be an individual sort of thing. And it's this desire to join up with something that makes them more inclined to join up with these radical groups just so that they can be involved with something. Just picture a group of people sitting around with nothing to do and someone speaks up and says, "Hey we could do this." Then all of a sudden everyone kinda kicks it around and before you know it they all are off doing it. It just so happens that most of the time these liberal minded folks are the ones there to instigate all of these radical ideas and everybody just kind of goes along with it to be accepted or that sort of thing.

It's been my experience with self proclaimed "experts" that they are not content to do what merely works. They have to promote their theory of what will work so that if the experiment works they can go down in the history books as saying, "Look at what I did!" So tried and true solutions are of little use to them, they are what other people have done, but oh no the "experts" way has so much more style and charm and will do a better job because the "expert" developed the idea. Funny thing is... most of the time the experiment is a flop, a ponzi scheme at best. This crop of radicals at the helm now fall into this catagory to me. How else can you explain the policies they enact that goes against the very fabric of the rational.

At this point it's blatantly obvious that this was never about healthcare. Otherwise why would the left be struggling so hard to keep the right out of the mix, moonlighting on so many occations, back door meetings, etc. When instead they could take a few simple steps to correct the system that would be far better. Why? Because they can't fit all of the political payoffs, and all the pork barrels in a smaller bill. Stack on top of that the power grabbing and what not that the "intellectuals" need in order to exert their "I know better than you" policies and you can't get away with anything less than 2,000 pages!

This is also easily verified if you watch any tv at all. just how many commercials come on advertising that if you took this drug you could be entitled to a settlement, or if you had this procedure and have these symptoms you could be entitled to a claim. These advertisements should clue any reasonably intelligent person into who is making the money off of these situations.

No one is forcing black women to get abortions, but based on the fact that the majority of PP clinics are found in minority neighborhoods suggests that PP is making an overwhelming attempt to make sure that minorities know that abortion is an option.
You know anytime I hear them talk about their climate models I'm always reminded of what one of my professors said in class when we were discussing curve-fitting and data interpretation. "With any data set you can generate a curve that accuratly defines the data set WITHIN THE CONFINES OF THE DATA YOU HAVE." Whenever you try to extrapilate outside of your known data then your really pushing your luck because the curve will do different things depending on the method you use to obtain it. You can make two curves that pass through the same data points but after that move off in opposite directions. Kinda makes it difficult to say what some system is going to be doing within hundreds of years if you ask me.
