Matador Abroad : DIY Study Abroad: 10 Ways to Educate Yourself While Traveling

Don't give up! Check out Evernote. It is better than Google Notebook anyway. Just look in the help for instructions on exporting/importing notes (so you don't have to do it manually again).

FYI: Google Notebook is stopping active development. This means no new features and no support. You might want to consider collecting your research using another site (like Evernote). If you already use notebook, then you can still access everything (for now).

Matador Change : The World's Worst Offenders

As Officer of the Deck, I used see all sorts of strange stuff out in the Pacific. There are a lot of little pieces of junk, but every once in a while, out in the middle of nowhere, a full-size refrigerator would float by the ship.

Travelers Notebook : Avoid the Classic Dumbass Move and Stay Alive This Winter

I got one: Go hiking in bear country alone. Set up camp and then go for a walk, leaving your whistle, bear spray, and everything else you might need back at the tent. Get approached by a black bear that isn't scared by your yelling , clapping, or waving your arms and just keeps walking directly at you. Eventually figure out that shaking your car keys vigorously (the only thing you have in your pockets) freaks him out enough for you to get away. I am much more careful now.

Travelers Notebook : The 6 Best Free Photo Sharing Sites on the Web

Great deal! I do really like SmugMug's presentation. However, I want to point out that Flickr allows you to set privacy options for your photos. So, I don't think that "no one can simply steal them like on Flickr" is accurate. I think that most people like making them public, but every photo you upload gives you several privacy options: Private, Visible to Family, Visible to Friends, and Public.

Matador Life : Four Easy Apartment Garden Projects

Yes. I grow lettuce mixes in my house. I haven't grown other vegetables inside. I usually start them inside the house and then transplant them outside. But, I know that with enough sun and a big enough pot, you can grow a really nice pepper plant inside. I would find a local garden center (not Lowes or Home Depot). Buy the seeds or plants there and tell them what you want to do. They should be able to give you advice on temperature requirements, sunlight, and care.

Sorry I took so long to answer. I tried a week ago, but the comment was eaten by the Internets. I don't use a rigid schedule for harvesting. Learn what the herb looks like full grown (find pictures or look at the grocery store/farmers market). Harvest leaves when they get that size. If you wait, and try to save them for later, then the plant might not respond as well when you do harvest. I check for herbs that are ready when I am deciding what to cook for dinner and when I am watering. If you are really unsure, you can grow extra plants. That way you can experiment and not worry about messing up a few. That is an approach I like!

Matador Pulse : Could a Travel Boycott Be Headed Utah's Way?

Has anyone heard anything first-hand from a Mormon official? I'd be interested in what was said. I am close to several members of the LDS church and have attended services many times and in several different states and countries. Unlike many other churches, I have never heard an LDS church official endorse a specific candidate or issue (even when Mit Romney was running). They always say something like "vote your conscience".

The LDS church itself didn't give money. But what if it had? Various churches actively raised money for Obama. Was that "overstepping the church-state division"? Would you call that "interfering so actively in politics"? Should we "pass some laws reigning them in"? I don't think that most people have a problem with churches raising money for political issues, as long as the church supports your side. :-)

There are many worthy people I left out. I chose most of the explorers because of books I have read. So, the list is based on what is on my bookshelves. And I read South not that long ago. However, I debated on including any polar explorers. The idea behind the article was explorers that didn't intentionally harm the people they met. That is less of an issue in Antarctica. I kept Shackleton on the list anyway, since I like his story so much! Thanks for reading!

Travelers Notebook : How Canadians and Americans Can Escape Their Conservative Governments

I remember the First Amendment. I just don't think it mandates separation of church and state. The concept wasn’t developed until after the Constitution’s ratification. Within the First Amendment are the establishment clause and the free exercise clause (it is easy to tell which is which). Often, the establishment clause is interpreted to mean that the government cannot create a national religion. Nowhere is it stated that we must maintain a completely secular government. Some elected officials are pro-life and some are pro-choice. It is a human rights issue. But it isn’t the same as creating a national religion, even if it closely related to religious beliefs. Many laws agree with commonly held religious beliefs. That doesn't suddenly make them unconstitutional. In general, I agree with the historical and legal concept. I just don’t agree that it is spelled out in the Constitution. It was developed afterward using a variety of sources. Just because something is later derived from the Constitution, it doesn’t mean that it suddenly exists there as well.

Yes, I am serious. Am I really unbelievable? Thank you. The weird thing is, I looked through the link you provided, but I never saw the phrase “separation of church and state”. If it isn’t too much trouble, maybe could you show me where it is? I don’t see it in your quote either. I am starting to think that it might not even be there! By the way, who are you referring to when you say “you people”?

I am curious. Where in the United States Constitution does it talk about seperation of church and state?

Matador Abroad : 5 Tips for Learning Foreign History Quickly

I know it doesn't fit the 'crash course' theme of this article, but if you have the time, take a class. I studied abroad in Wales for a year. I took two semesters of Welsh History. I can't remember much from my engineering classes that year, but I still know much more about medieval Welsh society than any normal person should.
