GDP per capita is fun, except that it leaves out the bottom of an important ratio: The cost of the assets required to create that output. In other words, it might be cheaper to live and build businesses in states with lower "GSP," resulting in returns on assets that are similar to states with higher GSPs. Is that why so many people moved to the South? The other thing that is weird is that everyone here has been trapped in the post's assumptions, namely, that GSP as a single stat and that financial accounting as a narrow concept can capture whether or not it's desirable to live someplace.

I think you need to be slightly more nerdy about this. This data only represents one lone factor: output. It says nothing about how efficiently it was produced (in regard to returns on capital, expense ratios, etc.) relative to other regions. It says nothing about the relationship of that output versus the expenses necessary to live there and produce it. It says nothing about the utility of that output (in terms of either practicality or satisfaction). And it says nothing about the quality of life or the quality of the individuals who live there. Though on the last point your prejudice is clear.
