Big Blue Uncensored : Mid-Season Comparisons Kansas-Texas-Kentucky

Purdue goes down at Wisconsin and Kansas bites the dust at Tennessee against a depeted UT roster. Then there were 2, and between Texas and Kentucky, I prefer Kentucky because of Kentucky's upside for improvement and Texas' recent deterioration at the defensive end.

Big Blue Uncensored : Brooks Retirment Presser

"3. In Rich Brooks’ case, the numbers not only fail to tell the story, they flat out lie. In 25 seasons as a head coach at Oregon and Kentucky, Brooks went 130-156-4 (.455). That winning percentage would get you fired in most places. But Brooks took hollowed-out programs, tore them down and built them back up. At both schools, his best years came at the end of his tenure. Brooks retired Monday and college football is a less talented place." By Ivan Maisel, January 5, 2010 at ESPNU College Football Blog, Three Point Stance.

Big Blue Uncensored : Cats Punk The Dirty Cards !!!

The popular view was that Smell is not a good team, but that is not the case. They gave the Cats a handful today, and that was not accidental. I saw it as a single digit game, with UK having the edge primarily based on the home court. I think that is how it played out today. Glad this one is over, and now it is time to focus on the SEC wars that lie ahead for this team.

Big Blue Uncensored : The Streak Continues !!!

When I was a student, I was introduced to the reality of UK-UT football. Stoll Field, late November [Thanksgiving weekend], and the Cats were within a few points of the Vols late in the 4th quarter, and the Cats were driving inside the 10 yard line for the winning score when UK Football, as I have known it for 50 years, was defined. The play call was a sweep left in which the UK QB was to pitch the ball to a running back as they both moved down the line. A Tennessee Linebacker came through the line of scrimmage untouched, and intercepted the lateral, and never looked back as he ran over 90 yards for the game clinching TD for Tennessee. I no longer remember the year, or who our QB was, or who the UT player was that made that play, but I was sitting in that endzone, and the play occurred right in front of me. Nothing surprises me any more about UK Football.

Big Blue Uncensored : It's Awesome To Be A Wildcat !!!!

I think I posted here a few weeks ago that a football season can take many twists and turns, good and bad, and yes, the Cats did let South Carolina and Miss St slip away, but they have gone on the SEC Road and won 3 in a row for the first time also since 1977. This team has won 5 of the last 6 since losing Hartline in the USC game probably cost the team that W. Not question that the Miss St game was a huge stumble, but this team has gotten back up. Now they have to do it one more time, and if, a big if, if they can get Tennessee on Saturday, this team will be one for the ages at UK, a 2nd place in the East, a very significant upgrade on the bowl availability, and a real shot in the arm for recruiting. Before the season, many people believed 7-5 was a reach, but 8-4 was a dream, and 4-4 in the SEC was a pipe dream. Now, 8-4, 4-4 are both within real reach. It is time to end the UT domination of our football program.

Big Blue Uncensored : Random Rant and a few Game Notes !!!

"Fact, Darius Miller regressed last season, his confidence was crushed and he is on the same level as the first year players." That may be an opinion, but it is far from a fact. Actually, Miller played his best basketball over the last 12 games, during the complete meltdown. That could support an opinion that Miller progressed nicely last season despite the turmoil swirling about him everywhere. There are other assertions presented as "fact" that are anything but "fact" Fact is: this UK team's defense has allowed almost 1 point per possession over the last 2 games. That is a fact. Opinion is: A defensive efficiency of 1 point per possession is equivalent to playing no defense at all.

Big Blue Uncensored : Is it time to worry about 2010 Recruiting !!!

If this group was playing great basketball, would it be too early to judge them as great? The quality of their play is what it is, and to ignore the fact that the defense has been non-existent is not wise in my view. There are explanations for the poor play that may have credence, but if the play was good, no one would be searching low and high to find any explanations to justify the hope for a better time.

In my opinion, it is time to worry about the 2009-10 season, not the 2010 recruiting. If the 2010 Cats perform at a high level, and compete for national honors in March and April, the recruiting by Cal will be successful going forward, but if he fails to mold this #1 class into that type of team, first those who believe that could be one and done will take a different view of Calipari and his marketing strategies, and second some of those anticipated roster spots from this year's crop of so-called one and doners will simply not materialize. The 2009-10 team has not started out like a team that will contend for national honors, and that is job #1.

Gonzaga took Mich St to the wire last night in Lansing with 10 players on the roster who had never appeared in a D1 game before. I tire of the excuses. It is time for this team to show us that all the hype and hope are justified.

Big Blue Uncensored : Great Weekend For The Cats !!!

Hartline got his chance to show he has healed and can play again. He did not achieve his personal goal, and Coach Brooks had him on a short leash yesterday, as he should have. The team now belongs to Newton, and Hartline's playing days are probably over. I hope Newton continues to gain maturity and with that maturity, develop his leadership qualities. But, the fact remains that since Hartline's injury, the Cats have had no passing game, and without a legitimate passing threat, they cannot beat Georgia next week. Joker must loosen up the game plan next week against Georgia to have any chance of leaving Athens 7-4 instead of 6-5.

Big Blue Uncensored : Random Rant!! (Hartline, Newton)

Look at his numbers to the point at which he went down. They rank in the top 8 of all time UK quarterbacks for any season. Hate on Hartline all you want, but a healthy Hartline remains the best option for 2009. If he is not healthy, then he should not play because he will not be the best option, but if the Doctors clear him, and his practice demonstrates his ability to go, then Brooks will play him, not because of some man-love for the kid, but because Brooks concludes that Hartline continues to be the best opportunity to win on Saturday against Vandy.

Hartline was leading this team to victory at USC when he went down. Why should he lose his starting job due to an injury? If he fails to perform, then Brooks will take him down, and he will be on a very short leash when he does get in.

Big Blue Uncensored : SEC West Predictions (basketball)

The predicted order of finish may or may not be the way it all plays out, but it is clear that the projected wins and losses for each team are impossible to occur. For every conference win there must a conference loss. However, the projections for the east and west as presented total 119 wins and 73 losses. The will be no more, and no less than 96 wins and 96 losses when all the dust settles at the end of the SEC season.

Big Blue Uncensored : Cats Fold !!!!

How is it that Vandy beat down Georgia Tech, when they lost the game by 15 points and gave up 56 points to GT. I would take that beatdown in Nashville 2 weeks, wouldn't you. I say the Cats will beat EKU and Vandy, they will go to Georgia 6-4 with a chance to get another unexpected road win in the SEC, and come home for Tennessee 7-4. Keep you chins up guys, this season is not over. Yes, the chance for a 'very special" season is gone with the wind of last night's humiliation, but this team can still get it done and go to Bowl #4.

Big Blue Uncensored : Thank You Lord !!!

Without a doubt, the NCAA has been exposed for the fraud that it is. The Emperor has no clothes. How many Thousands, Tens of Thousands, indeed Hundreds of Thousands of dollars did the NCAA and UKAA spent between them to provide that John Wall must repay $800 in improper benefits from his AAU Coach? If ever there was an example of someone trying to drive a half penny nail with a sledge hammer, this is it. In addition, the NCAA has demonstrated that their "rules" are meaningless. If the "benefit" that a player received exceeds $100 [What a staggering amount], then the "MINIMUM" penalty in addition to repaying the money is to miss at least 10% of the season's games. Let's take an analytical look at this situation: $800 >> $100 Yes. Serious offense!!!! # of games in 2009-10: 31 10 % of 31 games: 3.1 [NCAA should know how to round right] 3 [if rounding down] and 4 [if rounding up] NOTE: If 10% is a Mimimum, then rounding down would not be consistent. Wall's Suspension: 1 Game 1 Game << 3.1 Game MINIMUM. So much for rules and the NCAA. These guys are complete and total frauds.

This game was much closer than the final score suggests. The Cats got one special teams TD, and one interception returned for a TD, and the ULM offense failed to get any points on 3 possessions in the red zone, a mishandled FG snap, a missed field goal, and a deep drive that failed to score as time expired in the first half.

Big Blue Uncensored : Relax, Recruiting Will be Fine !!!

So very true, and a very nice summary of the state of recruiting for 2010. For the long term, Job #1 is restoring the UK Brand n the hearts and minds of these young players who do not fully appreciate the UK history and tradition. Coach Calipari has spoken to this task several times, and I believe that once he accomplishes that, if he has not already done so, then Kentucky will get to pick the prize recruits before any others even get an ear from the recruits. It will not be long before the old Rupp adage, that any youngster that comes to see the UK facilities, know the tradition and history, and does not want to play for UK is not smart enough to play here, and our staff will simply move on. It is truly a great time to be wildcat fans again.
