Big Hollywood : In Memoriam: Andrew Breitbart (1969-2012)

A real loss to conservatism and to the world. (I'm worried. I'm almost the same age. How do you die of natural causes at 43, short of classifying a falling piano as a "natural cause"?)

Big Hollywood : ‘Game Change': Meet the Leftists Who Turned HBO Into a Pro-Obama SuperPAC - Part 2

HBO is pay TV. It's extra, above the regular channels. So, unless you're talking about an "all movie channels" bundle, you should be able to cancel. Or just cancel them all. Netflix is only $8.

Big Hollywood : Your Obama Apologist of the Day: Jane Lynch

Nobody on the Right will deny that Obama held the office of President when the time came for him to make the most obvious call in the world. Now, will anyone on the Left acknowledge that Osama Bin Laden was only killed because of the War on Terror, the War in Afghanistan, the War in Iraq, Gitmo and waterboarding, all of which were vehemently opposed by Obama?

Big Hollywood : Daily Call Sheet: Box Office Analysis, America Doesn't Care About Sundance and '30 Rock' Day 2

"Point Break" was already remade as "The Fast and the Furious". I hate to say it, but I like 30 Rock a lot. The knocks against my beliefs are pretty constant (between Jack Donaghy's Republicanism, Kenneth's hick upbringing and Liz's "Clintonista" views), but all in all I have to say I'm surprised at the sympathetic Republican that Jack plays. I mean, I would expect Alec Baldwin to portray him as either a cruel devil or a moron, but often it's great to see Jack giving voice to right-wing beliefs. For instance, when he and his wife heard that their Canadian child delivery would be "free", they angrily refuse and insist that someone take their money. That's pretty much how my family acted when we got sick in England; all the Brits around us assured us that our medical treatment (despite being American tourists) would be "free", and we kept telling them it wasn't right to take their tax money out of their system if we didn't pay into it.

I remember the Friends episode where a woman steals Monica's identity and they befriend her. She rants about how bad "Dead Poets Society" is, because the kid who kills himself should have just waited a year to move out.

I don't know if you caught that he references "Glory" (I think the reporter didn't know what he was talking about, and so quotes it lowercase) as a movie that shows black soldiers being used as cannon fodder by white officers. That's George's take on one of the great films that is better written than any of his, apparently.

Big Hollywood : Big Movie Flashback: 'The Iron Giant' (1999)

Simply put, this movie is far more complex than simply saying, "It makes fun of duck and cover and hates guns so it's leftist." This is a good example of an intelligent movie that has themes all can agree on. Note that it doesn't chastise the hunters for killing a deer. Christian's review is wrong; the general doesn't grow. Throughout the picture he is a sober and clear-headed person who has to take on REAL threats (Commies and a malfunctioning alien war machine that has landed in this town).

Big Hollywood : Rockers Revolt Against GOP Types Playing Their Songs

When Sarah Palin's basketball nickname "Barracuda" was made known, people started playing it at her appearances...and suddenly Heart has to pontificate about how Palin doesn't represent them and blah blah blah. They couldn't just say, "We don't endorse her but thank you for making our very old song a hit again, just remember to pay your royalties." Bah. ... As for all of the people above saying, "Find the artist who agrees with you and support them," that's ridiculous. It precludes events such as the above, where a cool song fit the vibe of the time. (This is a film-related site. Do you make a soundtrack of songs selected from a short pre-approved list or do you find the songs that are right for the movie and pursue the rights?)

Big Hollywood : Netflix vs. Blockbuster: An Argument for Brick and Mortar Rentals in the 21st Century

I worked at Blockbuster from 1994-1996. Loved it. I made full use of my five free videos a week and acquainted myself with many of the older films. Nothing I loved more than finding some person who wanted something good but all the new releases are rented out. (Doesn't matter if you have 80 or 130 copies of the latest film...at some point, you won't have enough for everyone on that first weekend.) I can't tell you how many people got pointed to "The Manchurian Candidate," "Brain Donors" or "Rumble in the Bronx" because of me. I'm willing to bet, though, that every one of the above posters fixated on how the person coming in for the latest new release couldn't get it because we were sold out. That won't happen with digital. Now teenagers can rest assured that they can see "Meet the Spartans" any time they want and need never venture beyond their limited knowledge of films just because their crappy movie was always available. I understand why Blockbuster lost business. But I will miss the many great conversations I had with customers about movies when I worked there. Comic books may go fully digital, too, and then all the comic fans in a town will have no need to ever meet in person at a store and talk. I guess all I'm saying is, times change, but Zachary has a point.

Big Hollywood : Charge: 'Hawaii Five-0' Crew Members Disrespect Pearl Harbor Veterans

I think the situation is lousy, but I wish he hadn't ended with “Make a contribution to the Foundation and call it a day, and all is forgiven.” It just smacks of the same kind of "I'm outraged" shakedown that we get from Jesse Jackson and the LBGTQ crowd all the time. (I'm not saying it IS a shakedown, but saying it that way cheapens what is an actual outrage.)

Big Hollywood : Product Placement Gone Wild!

This has been bugging me for years, and it's getting more and more annoying. Once CSI: Miami had a plot that hinged on the use of a new three-wheel motorcycle, which is revealed with a wireframe and 3-D rotating view of it, and the CSI in question openly admiring how cool it is. (Hey, guess what the first commercial into the break was for?) I do think that USA Network shows are more bluntly obvious about this. "White Collar" has had numerous scenes that are meaningless to the plot where the lead character shows off how his car has blind spot detectors and automatic collision avoidance. What's bad about it is that it wrecks my enjoyment. I love all the geek culture stuff in "Big Bang Theory", but when you realize all the superhero costumes and stuff is DC (with Marvel only mentioned in discussion), it makes you wonder how much behind-the-scenes money is controlling what they say. Is Babylon 5 bashed because it's funny that Sheldon hates it, or is it because J. Michael Straczynski can't bribe them into saying they love it?

Big Hollywood : What Shoulda Won? 1999 Academy Awards

My five would be: Fight Club, The Sixth Sense, Toy Story 2, Bowfinger and Galaxy Quest. GQ would be a long-shot, but I just bought and watched the Blu-Ray last week and I was stunned at what a GORGEOUS movie this little comedy is. (In some ways, it does Star Trek better than the Star Trek movies of the time!) I think the winner would be The Sixth Sense... and I have to agree with the other commenters that judging it by Shyamalan's career since (Signs and Unbreakable being very good and the rest just sliding down to wretched) is completely unfair AND untrue to your "what should have won" concept. Isn't the point of this series to say, "If I ran the Academy THAT YEAR this is what I would have picked"? If you're going to keep judging based on how things aged, what people have done since, etc., then you aren't being true to the idea. The Sixth Sense should have won. Period. Great, engaging movie.
