So, the glazed radishes -- you simmer them on the stove top? That sounds like a better idea than oven roasting right about now.

I was actually thinking that same thing, and made a small batch with more egg and less radish. Wrapped it in a whole wheat tortilla, and it was pretty amazing. Thanks for mentioning this - I'd forgotten I had done that, too.

Home Ec 101 : The Minimalist Baby, What Babies Don't Need

Bulky strollers - I used ours only rarely, preferring the ease of the umbrella stroller. My granddaughter currently sleeps in a drawer instead of a bassinet. Her mommy & daddy's mattress is right on the floor, so they took an unused drawer and lined & padded it with blankets and have it right next to mommy's side of the bed. A sturdy box, similarly lined & padded, would also work. Find a good place for used baby/child items - some even have websites. If you end up with something you really don't use, you can sell it on consignment through them. My daughter likes a store near them called Enkore Kids (and they also have a website http://enkorekids.shoprw.com/home.php)

Home Ec 101 : Sunday Confessional May 29, 2011

Confession: I'm pretty sure the reason I had a heart attack last weekend was due to lack of exercise, which is also the reason I'm overweight. My cholesterol levels are all good except for the "good" cholesterol - it needs to be higher, and they told me that exercising is really the only way that will change, because my diet is already healthy. So, I've set a goal to walk twice a day, and try to push myself a bit more each time. Also, bounce on my rebounder (while using arm weights) for an entire episode of Boston Legal each day -- I'll have to work up to a full episode, but that's the goal. I'd like to see my granddaughter grow up, but genetics are against me - so I really have to put in more effort to make it happen.

Home Ec 101 : The Care and Feeding of Your Clothes Dryer

I got a text from my daughter last night -- "how do you get gum out of a dryer?" I never had that happen - other stuff, but never gum - so I suggested she make the gum cold first (ice or ice pack) then scrape it out with a hard plastic scraper, like those brown ones from Pampered Chef. Waiting to find out if that worked or not. What is the preferred method, if there is such a thing?

Yes, dance! When my kids were little I'd sometimes turn on the oldies station loud when I was cleaning. If a fast song came on, we'd all dance to it. They loved "You Make Me Wanna Shout" and would ask me to call the station and request it.

When there's stuff everywhere and life is just too loud and overwhelming pick one small area and make it a center of calm and order. Kitchen countertop, desk, dining table, living room or bedroom -- something you can do relatively quickly. What this gives you: a place you can sit in or look at and just breathe and relax for a short time. A sense of "Hey, look, I actually ACCOMPLISHED something!" My daughter, who has often been a better mom to me than I've been to her, figured this out for herself and taught it to me. If everything is total chaos, I cannot really relax. But, if I can establish an area that is ORDERED, I can relax a bit, then move on. I'd completely forgotten this until about five minutes ago, and need to make myself implement it again.

Home Ec 101 : Friday Free For All

Well, I wasn't exactly looking *forward* to it, but I finally managed to mow my half of my lawn today. Big deal, you say? Sure, but the last time I had to mow a lawn was before I had kids, and now my 21 yr old daughter has made me a grandma. The rest of what I have to mow is quite sloped, and I was so worn out it would have been dangerous for me to continue. Hopefully I'll get it finished before the weekend is out. I am trying out some different non-lettuce type salad recipes, learning to work with whatever happens to be a good deal that week. Lettuce has been rather insanely priced for a while, hopefully it will come down some. My recent post NotoriousTBG- @sqcomic Can you afford a megaphone Absorbency increases exponentially with the volume of the PING!
Home Ec 101 : Homemade Instant Chai Tea

Camilla -- All Heather did was share a link from another site that she wants to try and thought others might as well. Heather can't know what the other lady was thinking any more than you can. I didn't see any comments at that blog from you, so perhaps if you want to know, you could go over there and ask her what she's saying. Personally, I have had two different kinds of store-bought instant chai mix, as well as a chai concentrate that you add to milk, and neither of those came anywhere close to the taste of homemade. As far as Starbucks -- they make chai? ;-)

Home Ec 101 : Microwave Rice: Quick Tip

Back when I used to cook with a microwave, I would always use it to cook rice, but I had a 2 step process. Note: Cooking rice in the microwave doesn't take any less time than cooking it on the stove. Basically, I put the rice & water in a VERY large microwaveable mixing bowl and covered it with a plate - it wasn't a tight fit and you dont' want it tightly covered. Then I cooked it on high until it boiled, which varied with the amount of rice used. Five minutes for 1 cup rice & 2 cups water seems about right. Then you cook it at 50 percent power for something like 15 to 20 minutes. The directions came on a bag of rice I bought once, and I had just cut the directions out and stuck them in my rice canister. I think I pitched them when I stopped using the microwave, so I've just pulled those steps from my memory, but I do remember it working better and being less messy than doing it on full power the whole time.

Home Ec 101 : How Do I Reduce Lint in My Laundry?

While I'm not in the habit of using fabric softener of any kind, if a load comes out particularly linty, I make an exception: I've found that tossing a dryer sheet in with a load of dark stuff helps to reduce the static and allow the lint to (mostly) stay off the clothes and make its way to the lint screen. I don't care what brand as long as it's a scent I can tolerate. Some are just too migraine-inspiring!
