I have totally disagree with that man, because Mario is not a genre! For me I only count 2D and 3D platformers as "Mario games", and everything else is simply a (insert genre here) game featuring Mario characters. Example: Mario Kart is a cart racer, Mario Party is a mini game collection, Mario tennis is a arcade style tennis game, Mario Vs Donkey Kong is a puzzle/strategy game etc. . . Once you start lumping all these games in one category, then you start to diminish what makes these game so different from each other.
