The Tossed Salad : This and That Leads To A Miss

The best way to handle criticism is to take it in the right spirit. It is sad to see so many "reactions" instead of "actions". We have given Tossed Salad's opinion of their work. What is the problem in that? If you disagree with what we think, well good and fine, its just expression of thoughts. If you have problems with the way the site is being run, please contact us via email, this page is for commenting on the article, not on whether whether we know how to handle a website.

The Tossed Salad : World Cinema: Love It or Hate It

thank you anonymous :) the idea was to use the movies as an example for the characteristics of art movies, and hence no specifics of the plot were mentioned. I'm happy you are able to connect to the artistic aspect, there is a fine line between world cinema in general and world cinema in that sense. It is perfectly okay if you haven't seen the movies, they were not recommendations.

Yes, most definitely. The Aboriginal boy in Samson and Delilah, the entire time I saw the movie, I found his behavior so odd, but when I read up on petrol sniffing, it seemed so justified. There are always reasons. I agree with you that cinema is an art and you make money out of it, but I feel the danger comes in when the script writer forms the story, and puts the dialogue with money in mind. Sex, hot girls, drama, action. These are often used just to get audience attention. I don't feel that is the way scriptwriters should work, moulding the story into what they feel people want. How would cinema evolve then? I wrote on world cinema because I felt that it badly needed to be talked about. I have seen people's reactions to such films, and it quite sad. Memento and Reqiem for a dream are accepted as art movies, but whether they are or not is hardly the point here, we must look at the bigger picture :)

Though I will agree with you that Berman's "The Silence" was probably not the best example for identity crisis- I should have put Persona there.

Saket, I never said I found the behavior of "Alex" absurdly funny. When I said absurdly funny, I meant something you would not relate to very easily, and might find shocking. Basically, it would make you ask, why would that person do such a thing?! I loved clockwork orange, funny did not mean odd. it meant different. I was discussing about English and Hollywood films because I was talking about art-house cinema. It is easier to explain using examples people can relate to. Memento and Reqiem for a dream are not foreign language movies, but they are art movies. Like I said, it had an unofficial implication of art movies, and i said I was talking in the narrow sense. Apart from that, I'm glad you wanted to watch more films.

The Tossed Salad : M.F. Hussain: A Qatari of Indian Origin

Maybe he didn't, maybe it's what he wanted to paint. Painters are like that, you can not question a piece of art and ask why the painter drew that thing particularly and not anything else, its what appeals to someone.

So I ask you then, who then draws the line? And if nudity of common people is not hurtful, then why is nudity of deities hurtful? And if it is, should the approach be to banish it, or to ask yourself why is it that it affects you so much that you hold it against a person. The problem is not with the depiction of nudity, but the manner in which it is displayed.

Both of you are raising the issue of whether art has boundaries. Not as a response, but as my own extension of t hought, I believe that art is a form of expression of beauty. Since when did nudity become repulsive? The intention is not to defame or ridicule, but to enhance or bring out the loveliness. If not that, it is just an expression, and it is harmless.

The Tossed Salad : Road, Movie: The Dev B

At Taran Adarsh's review: to me, he seems to not have the patience that is required for a slow pacing movie like this one. again, he seems to expect a movie full of incidents that would prevent him from getting bored. I'm not surprised then that he didn't get the point behind the story. Secondly, by calling it a movie only for people who like "film festival movies" he seems to have restricted the range of viewers. Is it that "film festival movies" are not liked by the general public? Far from it. Finally, when he says that the director has concentrated more on visuals than on the story itself, maybe it is also important to understand that a movie does not always give its message directly in the most simplest of forms. At Nikhat Kazmi's review, he has given a quite good review of the movie. In the end, if he didn't find much to the story, that's his own view on it :)

Yes, that is one point which many people have raised, that I seem to have praised the movie too much, certain amount of criticism should have been there. No flaws as such, but at points the jokes did seem a bit enforced upon us. Thanks though :)

The Tossed Salad : German Bakery Blast: Oddly Similar to Delhi 2008?

Thanks for pointing that out arnab. Truth is, nobody really understands who is operating the Indian Mujahideen but it is believed by many that it is a combination of both SIMI (Student Islamic Movement of India) and LeT as well. Investigators believe that it is the "shadow amalgam of the SIMI and Lashkar-e-Toiba" as is often heard.
