Please let me clarify. There are different kinds of authority. I meant the kind that one can feel. I just wasn't feeling it in this guy. That's all I meant. Sorry if I offended.

I'm not allowed to have an opinion after 25 years of my own experience with God and teachers of varied traditions? Okay, I'll stop cause you said so. Hint: You, Zaratha, and people like you are the problem. Indigenous people can be mired in ego like anyone else.

I'll give the organizers of this rally an 'A' for effort, but... By no means an authority on this matter, I routinely sweat with a local tribe at their addiction center. I understand the meme that this guy represents, and that stereotypical "Native American" fashion of prayer delivery. Conversely, I've suffered under the likes of angry minority professors who treated their cultural awareness classes as a sort of dungeon for white guys. Something about this guy made me doubt the depth of his spiritual authority. With the president in attendance, was no REAL medicine man available?

The Wild Hunt : Quick Notes: Murph Pizza, Foreclosures, Chas Clifton

The article says, "...Some people become politically or socially active, like SuSu does with Coldwater Spring, or some people MYA just keep it in their back yard." I cannot help but wondering if the use of MAYA here was a typo or Freudian slip, as in, "some people are socially active, while others indulge in illusion in their backyards."

The Wild Hunt : Counter-Point: Christians Should Take Back Christmas

I've struggled with that. Honestly, I think one has to teach kids to occasionally have faith in improbable things. Life as a grown up comes at you fast, and can seem pretty hopeless at times. Ambivalence and cynicism come far too easy in Postmodern culture. Research shows that happy people are actually delusional in a positive direction - - and that this skill is learned. The last time I pondered whether or not my 4 year old was too sophisticated for 'belief' I looked over to find him talking to a stuffed duck, for Christ sake.

I agree. People have been bitching about Christmas starting after Halloween for a long time. Why should I care if people are making money and having fun? Heck, I'm a business owner myself. I'm pretty burnt out on worrying about my carbon footprint. As it is I'm vegetarian and limited myself to two kids. Can't I just enjoy my kids and the pretty lights?

This article reminds me of a joke I once heard - Q: How many vegan feminists does it take to screw in a light bulb? A: That's not funny. The criticism of American culture is a valid one. However, if the question is why do I, as a pagan, have a tree? Why did I watch Polar Express last night with my 2 and 4 year-old? Why does my son believe in elves and hope that Santa brings him a Transformer and an Iron Man mask? Um... 'cause if you have kids it's fun.

The Wild Hunt : Quick Note: The Problem With Majorities

My whole world changed once I began to look at Christianity as a cult. They are really quite strange - these people wearing torture symbols. By this I mean the cross, drinking his blood, and the random gestures of charity. They have odd buildings with uncomfortable chairs and pointy towers. Anyone who has ever LEFT the church can see brainwashing from the outside in. That stuff used to feel central to my being. If you had questioned it, I would have said, "Like duh, of course we're eating his body. The baby savior was born today!" It's rather embarrassing, really.

The Wild Hunt : Pagan Community Notes: Women and the Changing Face of Paganism, Pagan Health, Mount Franklin Gatheri

I'll throw my twig on the fire here as someone who has practiced Wicca since about 1986. People don't even know where the bow tie came from (there are theories only). How can anyone be certain about the origins of a religion? I was raised to the 3rd Degree in Masonry on the 6th of November this year, and am consistently shaken by the parallels between what Wiccans do and what Masons do. When you see a room full of men in tails and 19th Century finery squaring their corners in their monthly fraternal court, it is easy to imagine a guild of wizards in J.K. Rowling's universe... Most pagan men, especially post Harry Potter ones would find much to like in a lodge of so-called Millennial Masons. As a new insider to masonry I can say that there is something REALLY English and masculine about it. When asked I often say that I've joined a pack of wolves, as opposed to a pride of cats, which is the spirit of the Wiccan coven. The introduction of female energy as per Gerald Gardner must surely have caused a magical process in the 1930's- like adding a new herb to Absinthe to make Jagermeister. I can now EASILY see the very masonic Aleistair Crowley saying, "why would I want to be bossed around by a bunch of women?" as Hutton suggests. Since masonry has plenty of mystery cult aspects, including Tarot symbolism, it is not hard to see where much of Wicca came from. Of course, that is to say nothing of hedge witchery, fart bottles, sheep hearts and jars of nails filled with urine... that stuff is probably older than Masonry, to be sure, and speaks of a revealed religion as opposed to a ritual one.

The Wild Hunt : On Faith: Do We Need More Faith?

I think the word "Faith" has been hijacked by religion. As a Pagan I have the same "faith" a cat has when it jumps off a roof. The cat is relatively certain that the ground will respond in a certain way, and in this way the Gods are entirely trustworthy. Religion tends to mean "literalism." Literalism is for children, and people who breathe with their mouths open.
