Imagine if your friends reacted to, "I'm gay," with, "no, you're not, you're just pleasingly camp," or, "I'm female," with, "no, you're not, you're just one of the guys," the way good friends react to, "I'm fat," with, "no, you're not, you're just nicely curvy".

I think you should post this (all of it, really, not just the part I excerpted) as a top-level comment. It deserves the attention.

I thought Zulu was pretty good on racial issues, considering both when it was made and the historical period it was portraying. That might be my privilege talking, though.

Dairine *asserted* this was the case, but as far as I can tell, neither she nor Mehrnaz's aunt hold any rank in the actual formal wizardly hierarchy. As for connections, Dairine's aren't relevant here in this situation. Apart from her family, Kit and his family, and their friend group, who does she have connections to?

♦ The Mobiles, who are powerful and capable and love her, but live beyond Earth's event horizon and have more important things to do than get involved in slowlife politics;
♦ Skerret, who is currently the Master of the Crossings and probably Dairine's most relevant ally to this situation, except neither she nor he would consider the threat of revoking or limiting Earth's worldgate access a justifiable counter-tactic;
♦ The Wellakhit royal family, who are powerful and influential but who already have plenty of their own native politics to worry about, thank you very much;
♦ And Filif, who is a talented wizard, but doesn't seem to have any of his own connections that might be relevant here either.

In contrast, Mehrnaz's aunt has extended family connections who are willing to create passive obstacles to getting things done in Irina's bailiwick to express their displeasure at the slight Dairine offered.

Sadly the Penn in this book is... well, he's not an antagonist exactly, but he's an obstacle and a jerk.

That said, you should totally read these books! All of them! They're wonderful!
