The New Civil Rights Movement : Even George Takei Can't Save Christine Quinn

Bill deBlasio might win the Democratic primary, but I think that will automatically make Joe Lhota more competitive overnight in the general. And I really do not look forward to hearing about deBlasio's wife ex-lesbian status for the next four years. So insulting to any person who really is a lesbian. The least Ms. deBlasio can do is claim to be a legitimate bisexual. Ugh.

The New Civil Rights Movement : Harvey Fierstein On Russia: Gays 'Will Not Be The Scapegoat Of The World Any Longer' (Video)

I thought Mr. Fierstein was completely off base in his attack on Julia Ioffe, the woman who is denigrated during the course of his interview. Mr. Fierstein can be righteous about what he feels is important in the fight against the Putin government; but he should not denigrate a journalist who has lived and worked in Russia; who speaks fluent Russian and who understands the Russian psyche. Chris Hays did defend her comments in which she has explained how the Russians see the West. She is an interpreter, as any journalist maybe. Poor form Harvey. Poor form.

The New Civil Rights Movement : First Green Card Issued to Colorado Lesbian Couple

Yes, the Federal government will only recognize a legal marriage performed in the 14 states and the District of Columbia. They would also likely recognize a Canadian marriage, as well. Now that DOMA has been struck down...there si no doubt that a civil union would not have standing for federal government purposes.

Actually Marsh's petition for sponsorship of Popov was approved, but Popov has another step to go before his green card is issued. They have not had their interview yet and the green card has not been issued. Very different from Dowling and Davis. Every couple has to file a petition and an application for a green card to get the green card. Once the petition is approved it means the USG classifies the beneficiary as the spouse of a USC for immigration purposes. With that approval, you can file the application for a green card and that requires an interview. 99% of the time they are filed concurrently and both are adjudicated and approved at the interview. At The DOMA Project they have had some “stand alone I-130 petitions” filed purposely to try to keep USCIS from denying the cases quickly (they deny them faster if you have the green card application filed in the same package). Cathy and Catriona had specific legal need to file both and they got lucky and made to the interview and had an exceptionally nice officer who more or less agreed to put the case on hold (despite that essentially being the opposite of the Obama administration’s policy). Cathy Davis will go down in history as the first person to receive a green card based on a same-sex marriage.

So sorry my friend. These are terrible times. I have a friend who used to work in the TV news industry...he now drives a limonsine. I know I am lucky to be working and feel very bad for those who are really hurting. I am furious too...because Obama seems to have rolled over on Main Street. I wish you the very best.

Thanks Jay...nice point and I will read this link. There was just a piece in the Advocate too, titled "Obama: The Good Enough President?" which also points out a number of shortcomings on the promises Obama said he would fulfill on behalf of the LGBT community.

The New Civil Rights Movement : Bush, McCain Women Support Marriage Equality. Does It Matter?

The republicans have to die out--they have a HUGE generation and gender gap----as the hardline R's die out, they may face political oblivion, because young people, whether religious, in this case evangelical Christians or not, they have a greater acceptance of gays and I don't see them continuing to vote for the R's......but it is going to take some time.

The New Civil Rights Movement : Hey, GOP: PLEASE Use Tax Cuts To Block Repeal Of Don't Ask, Don't Tell

Obama does not understand what he is dealing with in the Republican Party. He still does not get it. While on his 10-day trip abroad, David Axlerod, his political advisor, gave away the store when he said the president was not going to fight over the tax cuts...as the POTUS, elected from the Democratic party, if he can not fight over extending tax cuts for wealthy Americans, then he should NOT be a Democrat and he should be a ONE term president. FDR, JFK, Hubert Humphrey and LBJ are rolling over in their graves. Obama had his ass handed to him by the republicans. What he should have done the day after the Dems lost 63 seats, was call Bill Clinton and get some invaluable political advice, instead of going on a 10-day overseas trip, where he stumbled in South Korea and threw together a trade policy on the fly (literally while in Air Force One) . He should have shook up his staff and hired new people. I am ready to vote Green in 2012. This president is weak, lame and politically out of his depth. He actually said today that he got off to a good start with the Republicans yesterday, yet today, they dropped a letter bomb on Harry Reid's desk--no vote on anything until they get their tax cuts for rich people. Let's call it a day Democrats; wake me in 2012!

Senator Kristen Gillibrand ran a very solid and credible campaign for election. I am so impressed by her courage, her tenacity and her commitment to LGBT rights. She representatives a new generation of leadership that really gets how the world has changed and she is not afraid to lead us forward. I am so proud of her. I think she has really grown into the job and her tenacious leadership. We are lucky to live in New York State with generally enlightened Democrats...generally.

The New Civil Rights Movement : The Valerie Jarrett LIE About Obama's DOJ And "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"

This White House has been accused of being arrogant and the evidence is clear--this is affirmed by Jarrett's comments in the past several days. It is clear that the Obama Administration does not take us seriously and are quite dismissive of the LGBT community writ at large, while simply not telling the truth--repeatedly. So just as the Bush administration lied to the American people, so has this Administration lied about their support of LGBT rights--with Robert Gibbs on the podium who is dismissive or nonresponsive and then the president sends out "senior adviser" Valerie Jarrett, who just tells bold-faced lies and is ill-informed about LGBT issues in general.
