My Sunday school class routinely has readings from the Guardian, London Times, NYT, Yale seminars, in addition to Biblical quotes. The discussions are open, free-ranging, and full of disagreement, but almost always expressed with the kind of civility that has departed Washington since the Nixon era. It can actually be a really cool church, once you get past the fact that 50-plus % of "Christians" have no idea what you are, and don't accept you as a being of equal worth and capable of salvation.
