Big Peace : Annoying Leftist Bumperstickers (Part 2): The Revenge

Ah, the 1980's. Remember all those "I Heart my (fill in the blank)" Bumper Stickers? I remember National Lampoon had an advertisement in its Classified section that offered various sized square stickers with nothing but a picture of a SCREW on them. Consider how long a victim would take to notice the fact that someone had compromised their bumper sticker with one of these little gems, effectively perverting their message: "I SCREW my Grandkids... I SCREW my Dog... etc, etc..

Breitbart.com : Gulf rig widows urge repeal of high seas death law

I will answer my own question, after a bit of investigation. An attorneys site (natch) says: "Damages under DOHSA are determined based upon the actual or projected value of the financial benefit that would have been received from the decedent. Under this theory, dependent children can recover for the value of the care and guidance they would have received from the decedent parent. A spouse can recover for the actual value of the financial contribution the decedent would have made to the family had he lived, less any amount determined to have provided for the care and maintenance of the decedent personally. Therefore, the recovery can be reduced by the amount of resources deemed to provide for the consumption and needs of the decedent had he lived. A simplified method of determining the needs or consumption of the decedent is to take equally apportion the family income to each member and deduct that equal portion from the projected income to account for the decedent’s anticipated expenditure. The DOHSA does not provide for a loss of consortium or loss of society claim, however, the spouse can recover for the monetary value of the household services the decedent would have provided. This portion of recovery is based on the number of hours the beneficiaries would have expected to receive in services from the decedent and calculated based upon an hourly rate for those services projected out for the decedent’s life expectancy." How is this unfair? These guys that were killed are in their early 20's, at least the ones whose spouses are complaining about the "limit". I smell golddiggers...

Breitbart.com : Family asked to pay for car damage after dog run over

"State law in Texas is that if your property causes the damage you are liable." EXCEPT if you are traveling on rural Farm-to-Market (FM) roads, such as the one I live by, where you as the driver are expected to be on the lookout for livestock, dogs, etc. Not sure if this was a suburban neighborhood or a rural area in Canada, but if I hit and killed someones family pet with my vehicle, I would fix the damage myself. How much can a bumper cost, after paying a deductible, anyway?

Breitbart.com : Ex-NSA worker charged in classified leak case

They won't release the name of the paper because that would allow folks to access known classified information. It is all about damage control; Neither Confirm nor Deny any specific info is classified. I agree with Walter, why is Treason not on the table? Leaking classified information in time of War? If found guilty (and these days THAT is sadly improbable), this Drake person should be facing a firing squad. Televised.

Punch Debt In The Face : I hate cash

There is nothing "magic" about using only cash any more than there is magic associated with card use (debit or credit). Following a job layoff and personal bankruptcy, we currently enjoy having only cash and checks to make our purchases. Fewer things infuriate me more than seeing the silly ads on TV where the credit card folks just whiz right through checkouts while the bumbling cash users are holding everyone else up. 99% of the time this situation is completely reversed, with a bunch of folks that have their cash ready in their hand to check out but everyone is waiting on the credit or debit card to process. Then that one fails and they want to try "another" one?!?!? Not to mention those who don't even know what product (credit or debit) they have and how to use it....

The Half Time Blog : Pre-Tea Party Protest against the first Gulf War in 1991

OK, Sara, point taken about Patriot-bashing. Just don't rap my knuckles with a ruler, OK? :-) I do hope, however, that everyone understands that there ARE groups within the US who DO hate America and all she stands for, and strive for her fall into one of the more uncivilized forms of government that exist today. Why they continue to stay here in utopia and muck it up for the rest of us baffles me. Oil is indeed a finite resource, and technologies to make solar and wind even remotely intelligent options are far, far away (unless some kind of stunning breakthrough occurs). So why have we not turned to Nuclear Energy? It is clean, cheap, and has been used by our supposed "betters" in Europe safely for decades now. The answer? The same groups mentioned above are scared of it, I guess. It is almost like some groups are locked into a caveman mentality of "Fire good, magic bad"....

The Half Time Blog : The 14th murder

Great Editorial! Even more enlightening are some of the comments, especially this one by commenter "TB": "Your hidden assumption that a child and a fetus are identical exposes your error. They are not. The fetus, having no capacity to process oxygen independent of the hosting mother, has been recognized throughout the world and human history as a lesser entity than a living child. Your own deity, Jesus, understood this. He lived under Hebrew/Roman laws which permitted exposure (infant abandonment) and abortion but never challenged them. You cling to opinions on fetal sanctity that are shared by few." I am not going to bother to register with the American-Statesman in order to reply, as I checked on this persons' posting habits in the past and discovered that logic and reason are very, very far from him/her. On most any blog, this person would be appropriately labeled a troll and quickly dispatched. Note that "TB" declares that the worldwide standard for fetal viability is its' ability to process oxygen independent of its' mother. I wonder how that squares with his/her opinion of partial birth abortion? In this context, partial birth abortion is murder, plain and simple. TB goes on to presume that the poster he/she was responding to is a Christian, saying that their "own Deity, Jesus, understood this". Aside from the assumption of anothers' unstated religious beliefs, someone today speaking for what Jesus knew , understood or approved of regarding this viability concept is the pinnacle of arrogance. Thirdly, TB goes on to convey that since Jesus lived under Hebrew/Roman law, that he approved of such behaviors because he "never challenged them". Troll Troll, Troll. "TB" is no more interested in honest debate than one of my dogs. He/she is, however, interested in becoming gratified by inflaming others.

The Half Time Blog : Pre-Tea Party Protest against the first Gulf War in 1991

Well, let us see. The United States imports approximately 70% of its' petroleum from other countries. This is because the radical environmentalists refuse to let us tap into our very own vast resources, which we have identified long ago. If our petroleum supply is choked, bad things like shortages, negative economic consequences and long lines for gas occur. In order to maintain our Freedoms and way of life, the United States has a Strategic National Interest in petroleum. So to answer your question; Yes, sending our troops to protect our National Strategic Interests (NOT just to "DIE") is a valid initiative. Let me extend this a bit. If the America-Hating radical Left and Environmentalists had allowed us, as a nation, to pursue our very own petroleum stores, we would not be in the position we find ourselves in today; having to project the threat of military power halfway across the globe in order to maintain our status quo. Unfortunately, the irony of this situation is lost on those folks, who, by their efforts, have forced us into the position we are now in. I fail to understand why the Left cannot see past the first curve in any road, it is like there is a mental block or something, the inability to see future consequences caused by current actions (or inaction).

The Half Time Blog : My Near Death Panel Experience

After re-reading the posts above, I am going to go out on a limb here. I HATE Government intervention in our pursuit of Life, Liberty and Happiness. That being said, we are technologically entering an era we have not encountered before, that of genetic activity. Genetic activity takes many forms, and I am not at all yet prepared to discuss, much less name, all the different factions that exist today. But it is a fascinating and (I believe) very dangerous road to travel. Reality shows and real life give us examples of the possible consequences of this (Jon & Kate + 8, the Octomom). Where do we draw the line? Human Cloning? It is already claimed to be possible. Some mad scientist in some lab somewhere in the world will want to be the FIRST to achieve a breakthrough that may either be fantastic in its' possibilities, or it may fatally damage us as a Human race. Very tough territory. Have a great weekend, everyone!

I say we throw them all out and start over. And we all pay better attention after we do. I personally was all for taking some oil to pay for our costs in liberating the Iraqi people. The Left endlessly screamed about "No Blood for Oil", so I figured go ahead and take some since we are being accused of doing it anyway.

Being boxed in to one of 2 parties stinks. I read a quote somewhere: "Whether you vote Democrat or Republican, the Government always wins". I believe you have an interesting point, Sara, regarding Personal Freedom. It is when Freedom crosses Morality, whether it is in our Personal Decisions or Business Decisions, that we encounter problems. And I will be the first to admit I don't have an answer for that, other than the Ten Commandments seems like an awfully good place to start.

The Half Time Blog : My Near Death Panel Experience

Say, you can't fool me! MIchelle Malkin told me to look at the date and number of pages in your link. 1,017 Pages dated July 14th, 2009? Was THAT the Bill they sent over to the Senate? *removes tinfoil hat* Seriously now, what part of the Heath Care Nightmare do you support? The rationed care? The longer waits? The higher cost? The fact that the Government will own and share your personal medical history with everyone in the system? Or is it the fact that the Government has it's nose in between you and your doctor, and his pay is directly impacted by the treatment he offers you? Apparently you misunderstand about the States "options". The States can Opt OUT, not IN. HOWEVER, if a State opts OUT, it STILL MUST PAY it's share into the Government. Now, what would YOU do, as a State Representative, looking at the bottom line? Destruction of the existing system and moving towards a Single Payer System is what this is all about. Obama campaigned on it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpAyan1fXCE With the added costs of Obamacare, employers will drop their group plans, as there is no incentive for them to keep paying in, when employees can get get the overall crappy care cheaper from Government! Here is a brief glimpse of what Obamacare will do. Just a small glimpse, mind you! http://tinyurl.com/yjkm5ho

The Half Time Blog : Afghanistan is Made of Quicksand

Fred Thompson (who I really wanted to represent the "R" party last election) weighs in on Afghanistan: http://tinyurl.com/ya8xwbe Quote from the Article follows: "It really doesn't matter how President Obama divides the Afghan baby, how he splits the difference between McChrystal and Biden. Because the war has been lost," Thompson said on his radio show today. "I say this because of one sad and simple fact. The president does not have the will and determination to do what's necessary to win it. His heart's not in it, and never has been. The Taliban knows it. Al Qaeda knows it. Our allies know it. And the American people know it. "Our enemies are now emboldened and our friends are discouraged. We cannot prevail if the American people are not willing to make the sacrifices necessary for an extended effort. The case has not been made to them to justify this effort. The case can only be made by the president. This president is unable or unwilling to make that case," Thompson said.
