World In Conversation : Do you think in today’s society people are more racist toward Muslims or Blacks?- 119 Blog

In today’s world I feel that the Muslim community is discriminated against much more often than black people. Though I know that both are discriminated against more often than they should be which is not at all, but because of the late happenings I feel that Muslims are discriminated against more. The terrorist attack on the world trade centers is what first started the discrimination of Muslims. The terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centers were a horrible day for all Americans, including the muslin Americans. Also, the media since then has done nothing to help the situation, in fact all the media has done is blow it up to where it is hard for the majority of uneducated Americans to know anything else than what they hear and see on the news. Another difference is the amount of people. Since, there is less Muslim Americans that are easily spotted compared to that of any other race that is discriminated against I feel that Muslims don’t have as much power because of their low numbers to change their image in this country. Another thing that comes into play when talking about who is discriminated against more is the amount of time that the country has been dealing with the discrimination. For blacks it has been slowly getting better over a century and some decades. They have had a civil rights movement with people that became huge American figures like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. For Muslims their fight has just started on a large scale only this decade. I know that the two had much different starting point and different situations, but I feel that these two factors also account for the difference in discrimination. Finally, I think that there has to be more of a need for education about what it is to Islamic or Muslim. In reality most Muslims are very peaceful and mean no harm to anyone. In fact, Islam is very close to its monotheistic sisters, Christianity and Judaism. All three religions believe in one creator and most of the holy books have overlapping stories. So really most of the Americans that are Christian or Judaism and have a huge problem with all Muslims are just ignorant and do not know the true religion only what the media tells them. In today’s society muslim Americans and muslims in general are discriminated against more than blacks. Both should be discriminated against less because it is stupid to judge people on their skin color or what they believe in because it is different than you, everyone can believe what they want.

World In Conversation : How do you feel about the way people live in America compared to other places around the world?- 119

Personally, I love the way that we live as Americans. I think that it is great that we use and consume what we have. I like how Americans try to innovate, think greater than just their selves, and have a want to help people around the world. I like that we use resources for what we need and try to keep growing. At the same time I am not someone who thinks that America is the greatest country on earth because there are many other beautiful places around the world where people are safe, happy, and successful no matter what definition of successful you want to use, whether it be economic success, spiritual success, or just being happy. I think that the fact that most Americans are richer than the rest of the world is an ok thing. And for those living in poverty in the US and say they are poor are both correct and wrong, it just depends on who they are comparing their selves too. On that note of being poor or rich I don’t think that the richness needs to be spread around to a great extent. There needs to be a separation of wealth and power. The entire world does not need to all be on the same level. That is way too much of a utopian idea for me, since I feel that there always needs one extreme for there to be the other and everything in between. Also, if more of the world had the same standards that we do in America then there would not be enough resources or food to go around. Therefore, no one would be able to live like we do as Americans anywhere in the world. People around the world that don’t have as much wealth in money and the way we live have wealth in other ways like happiness and don’t need or want to live as we do in America, so I don’t see a need why we need to share our monetary wealth with those people if they don’t want it. I know that this is a small amount of people, but if looking at the world population I will be millions of people. Another problem that could arise if we were to share more monetary or socioeconomic wealth with the world a new world government or rule would need to take place to oversee this distribution and currency system. Education would be a problem that could arise as well because for people that had never had wealth they would have to learn how to use it effectively. And with more education there will be more people that will want to do lower end, blue collar jobs that are the foundation of the way that we live. We don’t have to concern ourselves with distributing wealth. It will naturally get passed on to the next dominant country just like empires in history have risen and fallen distributing their wealth away naturally to the next empire.

World In Conversation : Why Do We Need to be Politically Correct?- 119 Blog

Political correctness is not necessary. I think that it is not necessary because it is holding back from what we really need to say. If we cannot make everyone happy by saying something certain then we should just say what we do all the time. If we would be consistent in what we say then no one should be mad or offended. To be honest I think that when some people try to speak with political correctness they cannot get the same message across or change the message totally so as not to offend some people. For instance, think of if certain movies or books had not used certain language in the piece, would it still be the same. A good example is the book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. This book classic book that tells and amazing story about a young boy and an escaping slave. This book uses the n-word over one hundred times. One group has taken out all of the n words and replaced them with slaves to lessen some peoples rejection to the book and be more politically correct. The altered version of the book was more accepted in schools and was not banned. This altered book, however, has a much different feel and meaning. The word was used to show how the people at the time talked and spoke to give the book a real feel. Also, for most of the book Jim is not a slave anymore he is an escaping slave and Huck does not see Jim as a slave through the book, he really sees him as a friend and fellow traveler. This book is not a racist book even though the n word is used very frequently both by Huck and Jim. The book is actually against racism and showed how a white boy that had not been taught fully by society yet to dislike and look down on blacks he saw the more uneducated Jim as a fellow human not a less than equal slave. Twain also wrote Jims speech phonetically the way black people would talk at the time. If Twain would have written this book in a politically correct way it never would have become a classic and had such a large impact on the people who read it and how their thoughts changed.
