Power mauls will be good (read "better then swords") against things like 2+ (especially 2+MCs), MEQ with storm shields and demons, who have a high toughness and who's armour save is invulnerable anyway. Also reasonable against light vehicles.

Not that I would want him in combat with terminators or the like anyway - but since it will happen eventually which would you prefer? The S6 maul or S4 sword? I know which I would like... and if they happen to be something like LC Terminators (yes, yes - rare I know) or anything else AP3 or better the Concussive rule might even save a few of my dudes in subsequent rounds (if the fight lasts that long).

While I do agree that the ubiquity of MEQ makes the mauls AP4 a major downside over the swords AP3, I am surprised everyone seems to be so negative about it - especially given how popular consensus seems to agree that 2+ is going to become the new pink (3++ will remain black). A foe against whom which the maul is the clear winner..... well second best to AP2 anyway....

It would appear that the primary issue with regards to 6th Edition is how do averages work....

A D4's opposing sides do not add up because it has no opposing sides (unless you have those horrid round ones). Each face is opposed by an apex....

Also the reason for the opposing sides has nothing to do with balance or mathematics. It is merely a very simple yet highly effective anti-cheating method. It is done so that there is a wide and varied spread of numbers around the die.

Imagine if all the high numbers were on one side of the die (like a spin down die). People would start learning to roll their dice in such a way that it favoured that side (This especially true of D20s in games like D&D). We all know someone that would do it (and if you can't think of anyone it is probably YOU)....

So instead they break the numbers up. Have a closer look at your D20 - next to 1 is 19, and next to 20 is 2. This is the exact same principle that is applied to a dart board - keep aiming for that 20 and there is a reasonable chance you will hit that 1 right next to it.

I would love to know how you managed to add the opposite faces of a D3.... seeing as they don't have any....
