So essentially Spider is making the transition from criminal enterprise to government service. People do this mostly because it generates more profit for them at lower risk.

You're assuming that Moore's law continues forever. It won't but we don't know when the turning point will happen. I would suggest that it's likely that point is far before the present time in the story.

The appropriate term for what you've described Kris as is "power user". Super user implies administrative access on a system as well as a comfort with the details of things that Kris is likely never to care to exercise. If you want superuser, you already have one, Grace. Focused on technology, with her own code of ethics that is a little off kilter to everyone else's, but reliable in a position of great trust.

On the incentive page, Melody seems to be having a hard time. Are the atlanteans going to be coming on scene in the main story? I can just imagine a sunlander/atlantean confab. Shudder.

I think you have just identified a great profession for Zeke. Perhaps the Empire is looking for a sunlander to break up the local idiocy and our local boyscout mentions Zeke as someone they can work with who won't be easily pigeon holed into irrelevancy.

I live in NW Indiana in the part that is included in Chicago metro so I'm pretty familiar with the machine that runs it. It's got its tentacles deep in here so we don't become NJ to their NY and steal away all their back office work. I generally describe Romanian politics to americans as "Chicago, on a bad day". The two are not as far apart as you seem to think. Katastrophe's explanation above about Sunlander electoral foolishness makes the pieces fit so it's not like there's a serious problem because of this political digression. At most we provoked a bit of furniture rearrangement backstage on scenes that have yet to be shown. That's cool. I like provoking thought.

Given what we know about this world, I find it pretty unlikely that such monolithic groupings would even be possible. You'd essentially be suggesting that only one person from the dominant group would want power. If two are fighting it out and are closely divided, the greens get to be kingmaker. Presumably, they redistrict them into more districts in order to narrow the split necessary for the greens to play that role but that's a sucker's game. There are always people hungry for power and willing to say what it takes to get close enough to 50%+1 that the greens get to be a player. I've seen the game played, real life, in Transylvania between ethnic romanians and ethnic hungarians. Ethnic hungarians end up in the government time and again even though there's little love lost among ethnic romanians for their old colonial masters.

As a matter of limiting influence, this is actually wrong. If you want to politically neuter some minority you gather them up in one district, where they happily vote in one of their own who is overwhelmed and ineffective and excluded from anything of consequence in the legislature. If you want to maximize their influence, you split them up so that they can be kingmakers in a number of different districts and are thus a power to be courted for a whole block of legislators. That's actually much more dangerous to the status quo.

I'm expecting that Alain is kicking this upstairs as we speak and Nash is about to have an urgent appointment in uptown with an important person that he could make it to on time, if he weren't in lowtown outside of the area he's supposed to be. Nobody wants the police to get industrious over one of their own getting hurt or killed. The police don't want free lancing down in lowtown either. Best of all, something as trivial as a phone call might not be a big favor.

http://www.prdaily.com/ : The GOP brand needs fixing | Articles | Home

The GOP does have a brand issue. It is scandalous that the party that has brought us trillion+ deficits as far as the eye can see is favored by ordinary voters on the issue of solving long term debt. The GOP is objectively better on the issue but the Dems win on polling. How is this *not* a brand problem? The Democrat party is the party of entrenched interests when it comes to entitlements and has been for decades but they also win (by a larger margin!) the race as the party most trusted to reform entitlements. This is mind blowing and, again, a brand problem. You can go down the list and time after time you will see issues where objectively the GOP should be winning or at least close to winning but instead is blown out of the water. Branding is a major component of this phenomenon.

Ocean State Current : The Unmentionable Solution to the Fiscal Cliff

Until small government advocates get the actual legislation and regulation chapter and verse easily available to citizens and point out how such repeals will increase income, increase revenue, ease tax burdens, and reduce the difference between what we've promised and what we're taxing, this is all going to be theoretical. I'm personally building the baseline tools necessary to do this (still crossing my fingers and hoping for a January 2013 start). I'm more than happy to work with anybody else willing to push for the same goals.

Commentary Magazine : What’s Going on With Chris Christie?

Compare Christ Christie's approach to Bobby Jindal's approach and I think you might get an inkling of what conservatives hoped for, but didn't get from Christie. It's not fair to compare Christie to some Platonic ideal but Jindal trail-blazed a better way and Christie declined that path. He rightly gets the brickbats he deserves for it.

Commentary Magazine : Should the Pentagon Respect North Korean Intellectual Property?

The Pentagon's lawyers have done much worse. They are guilty of violating our Geneva Convention obligations when the number of war crimes by our enemies exceeded their ability to handle, they threw up their arms and stopped prosecuting them. This failure was the genesis of the "jihadi catch and release" problem that got quite a few people killed. If this is what they are doing instead of prosecuting war crimes, they have blood on their hands.

The Tea Party Economist : Stung by a Scorpion, Then by a Hospital. This Could Happen to You.

Yet the rate of return on publicly held drug companies is not that unusual. So where does the money go? Overcharging here and normal pricing there should lead to above average rates of return and a gold rush spate of new entrants. So maybe what is actually happening is different. Maybe Mexico imposes below normal pricing there and the drug companies make up their losses from the theft on everybody not stealing. That is actually normal practice when retail stores suffer from shoplifters. The big problem is that every major country except the US steals this way. The whole system collapses when the last non stealing country signs on to socialized medicine.
