Valued comments, it would seem, GTAC. However, I find it contradictory that you would say AUP missed his calling ("calling was political") when the political process, especially in Venezuela (one would argue in all places) revolted him. In fact, and I speak with far less information on the man than you have, I don't find that AUPs achievements contradict his essence as a mature, calm and rational intellectual. Perhaps the ones that debase AUPs direction have a wish-fulfillment that AUP never gratified for them. Tant pis pour eux.

Qué bonita coherencia, la de AUP. Sin pantallerismo, sin narcisismo. Pura buena escuela. Good background sets, too: simple and dramatic without glitz. What a contrast to so many bullshitters in the general media who expound but don't believe in what they're expounding upon, and/or don't have the specific training in the subject on which they gas up like helium balloons in order to gain centre stage. It's that narcissism, that 'pantallerismo', compounded with the decline in 'urbanidades' and 'caballerismo', that has been a hallmark of the petrostate, I think, even before Chávez. Qué lástima.

Calm down, Quico. I know the world revolves around you, but here's a newsflash: (a) you're not the only poster to this blog, and (b) there are comments to read from many, not all of them favourable to you. Which is okay as long as the negative contributions aren't from women. That's what gets you riled. Here's another newsflash: I find your style tending towards the flippant, arrogant and self-involved. When it doesn't lead in that immature direction, your writing is great. But ain't some egos a bitch to dominate in order to allow good craft to flow? You already know my other beef on the mismatch between word and deed. The most outrageous of these was the discovery that you were getting high on the political pulpit but hadn't bothered to organize yourself to vote. In the end, it all boils down to principle, integrity and humility. T'hat's what maturity is all about. (Check out the NYT article on Gustavo Dudamel in LA.) My Dad was a pinnacle of these qualities, and his footsteps are those that I follow. As for your debt to my father, give me a break. I return to this post in order to answer your hypersensitivity. At first glance, I can name costs of transportation and raw materials. These have not entered the picture you wish to draw; they are a vital part of project analysis. So, too, is the time factor. We don't know when the other plants were planned and built. Did cost projections take place over a period of time in which oil futures pointed to rising prices? The list of unmentioned factors are many. Their appearance would kill the drama of words needed to appeal to readers hungry for a morsel but not hungry enough to examine what they are reading in any great depth. In the end, I decided to pass on this simplistic analysis.
