Living in a rural area, it absolutely disgusts me the amount of people who just drive their pet somewhere and dump it off. At least the pet stands a chance at a shelter. Our dog Maya has serious abandonment issues thanks to the asshole who dumped her in our town and drove off. She waited in the same spot for several days before she started scavenging. She wandered our town for a month before we discovered her and won her trust. It seriously messed up her head. And I'm with you - once Summer and Maya have passed, that's it for us unless I have a change of heart. And if we do get another dog, it will be the kind I can pick up. I can't do big dogs anymore. Also, I think older people need to discuss contingency plans for their pets if they die or become seriously ill. Like what happens to the dog if the owner dies.
