It does pace much slower than a movie made in the last 15 years, so it can be trying if you are just starting to get into foreign films. I will say in my defense that Kurosawa makes movies that are slower paced but can suck you completely in. I would have chosen Throne of Blood or Ikiru, those movies are masterpieces.
