Stock Gumshoe : "Retire on this one hot stock... American company making China's dirty water problems vanish"

Don't know which ad you're referring to or if Clark is now out with a lower-priced stock tout, haven't seen one like that lately. The stock that is often teased as a China water pick "penny stock" because the shares are low-priced (it's not a small company, but the share price is low) is Hyflux, I last wrote about that one for a Chris Mayer teaser here: http://stockgumshoe.com/2011/08/cash-in-on-china%...

Stock Gumshoe : Could the "Fourth Element" Make You a Fortune?

That may be the push behind the offering, then -- from what I saw the filing on Sept. 12 was for a maximum of $8 million: http://www.ibcadvancedalloys.com/news/2011/09/12/...

That "Last stock you'll ever need" bit from Patrick Cox is about Star Scientific (CIGX), the pitch has been circulating in that form for several months and he's touted CIGX for quite a while -- extremely volatile stock.
Yes, OI has indeed been outstanding during much of the last decade -- good picks and a great tailwind from increasing commodity prices (most of the time). I don't know the track record for King's Energy and Scarcity, which is a much more expensive letter that often focuses on these teensy little stocks that much more easily get whipsawed.

Can't blame you for feeling that way, Geoff -- but it's human nature, that 1% of the time that something is real (or real-ish) keeps folks receptive to the promise of sudden wealth. Hope and greed are hardwired in -- as is, of course, the tendency to forget our past mistakes :)

Stock Gumshoe : "Rare Substance Hidden in the Forest of Southern Sweden"

We certainly weren't promoting Stans Energy, though it was being touted by Byron King over the Winter -- my last comments about it are here: http://stockgumshoe.com/2011/02/taste-of-the-frid... The stock seemed to peak with Byron King's adoration, despite the existence of some old refinery parts on site they seem to be quite a ways from actually producing rare earths so perhaps the rare earth mania has moved on to other stocks (though most of them are down substantially since the Winter), but I haven't looked in detail at the Stans story of late. It is, for what it's worth, still often mentioned as one of the more promising heavy rare earths sites that has a hope of reaching production in the next decade.

Stock Gumshoe : "Deception, Inc." -- profiting from the "World's Largest Con Game"

Good point -- lots of their volume comes through the API for their trading system, so presumably from the algorithmic rapid traders, so if the regulators succeed in putting brakes on that business the exchanges and folks like Icap could potentially see a hit to revenue.

I'm not recommending anything -- those older picks of Robinson's were from July 2010, not 2011, so they're all up nicely from his first recommendation though they're certainly down over the last several months.

Stock Gumshoe : What is Frank Curzio's "$10,000 Pill" Stock?

I generally like Frank's work too, actually, though I've never met him and don't subscribe to his newsletter. I've appreciated his free podcast for years, and like some of the articles he writes on Stansberry's various free sites (Growth Stock Wire among them) -- the podcast also includes a lot of Stansberry and other Agora-published guests these days, now that he works for S&A, but it's not a pitch-fest like so many podcasts and radio shows. I don't know what his performance has been since joining Stansberry a year or two ago (before that he worked with Jim Cramer at TheStreet.com and ran a small cap newsletter for them), but I like his free content that I've seen.

Ha! No, that's more of a trade secret -- like the Coca Cola formula, it's under lock and key and far too valuable to patent. Or maybe it's under the corner of the rug. Or in the cheese drawer. I'll never tell!

Stock Gumshoe : "They Stole $267 billion of King Saud's Oil"

I think Vanoil is blocks 3A and 3B, right along the Somali border in E. Kenya. It's out of date because of several acquisitions and mergers in the past year or so, but this older map of the concessions gives an idea of where things are: http://www.vanoil.ca/i/maps/East-Africa-Explorati... You can see that the shape of the exploration parcels for all of this more or less conforms to the expected underground basins, often based on not that much recent data so far, though there have been plenty of wells drilled historically and activity has picked up this year. FYI: General article here: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-05-13/kosmos-r... And specific note on delays for equipment for AOI and Tullow here: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-08-04/tullow-a...

Tullow has indeed been a great Africa oil company -- I think part of their price weakness has been the dispute over exports and licenses/taxation in Uganda, not sure where that now stands. And yes, Tullow is the key partner and operator for most of AOI's key exploration blocks. Definitely a much larger and probably more stable play on developing oil in E Africa.

Stock Gumshoe : Captain Cook’s “Oil Jackpot”: How to Become the Next Alaskan Oil Millionaire.

I certainly didn't do exhaustive in-depth research on this one, as I hope was clear from the article above, but was focused on identifying the stock that Chris Mayer was teasing and giving folks a start on their research. About ten days after I wrote this some more criticism came out of Miller from the StreetSweeper folks (http://seekingalpha.com/article/282825-miller-energy-this-hot-alaska-stock-may-be-about-to-melt-part-1), who did much more investigation than I did, and that really got the lawyers revved up. The current crop of lawsuits from shareholders started building following the StreetSweeper stuff and, more importantly, the collapse in the share price, about two weeks after this article ran. I wish I could delve into all the filings and possible chicanery of each company I write about in these brief teaser identification articles, but I'm afraid that's more than we can reliably do for a new company (or handful of companies) each day. I have not looked at the stock in any meaningful way since I wrote this article back in mid-July, just to be clear, and have no idea whether the allegations are accurate.

Thanks for the update -- he does say the he looks for riskier high-yield picks in this letter whereas Utility Forecaster is a more conservative portfolio, but we also do often see newsletters use a full-throated "buy now" tease for a stock in their ads months after the editor has actually recommended selling the pick, sometimes a story that's easy for the marketers to sell wins out over an actual investment idea.

Almost everything is taxable if you make a profit on it, it's just that different assets have different reporting requirements -- GLD is, according to them, treated as a collectable for tax purposes. From their website: "The United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) treats gold as a collectible for long-term capital gains tax purposes. As such, gains recognized by individuals from the sale of SPDR® Gold Shares are subject to a capital gains rate of 28% if held for more than one year. This rule extends to all gold held by the Trust. Although there are some restrictions applicable to retirement plans such as IRAs and 401ks investing in collectibles, SPDR® Gold Shares received a private letter ruling permitting investment by such retirement plans."
