I agree with you also. At least that the family should consider community service and advocating for safe driving for teenagers and the consequences that can come. Has the teen even apologized to the family for their loss? Does she realize that there were two other children there who saw their sister killed before their own eyes? I think jail time will send a message to other kids that there are consequences to distracted driving and it's more than, "Oh I have to go volunteer for an hour after school". I think she should not be allowed to have a license until she's 25. She was also disobeying the law by having other people in the car. She shows some disregard for the law, obviously.

I think this sends a good message to the kids in her high school that there are consequences to the teen's actions. When I think of picking up my phone, I think twice because of this incident. Teens need to know that they are not invincible and that they can hurt others. She was, by law, not even allowed to have the other teens in the car, probably a law created to avoid distraction. I don't think she should be declined college -- that is more distructive than good -- but certainly she should not be permitted a license until she's 25 perhaps and perhaps she and her family should consider advocating for distracted driving and being a positive role model to others.

I agree that 3-9 months is nothing when the mother has lost her little girl.. and not to mention that her two other children saw it all. Those kids will live with that forever. I wonder though... why she plead "not guilty" to the charge... it's almost a slap in the face to the family. She is certainly guilty of harming that child and it could have been more people harmed.
