OK as T-Mobile don't officially do the iphone in the UK yours is locked to wither Orange or O2 I presume. In which case you need to install blacksn0w to unlock the phone.

pwnage takes the original firmware file and customises it to allow access to the undelying system i.e. jailbreak, you can also 'activate' the iphone instead of using an official carrier sim in itunes. Then of course you can run one of the unlock programs. If you have a a mac or access to one you download pwnage and the original firmware, follow the prompts and upgrade the firmware on your phone. The custom firmware can be used ona Windows PC as well. if you don;t have access to a mac then there are places on the net to download customised versions that others have created and made available. There are many tutorials on this on youtube but I prefer the iclarified ones as they are more user friendly. Its very hard to brick an iphone when updating firmware and unless I'm mistaken you should be able to re-flash the firmware.

No they will unlock within your contract - they still expect you to complete the contract though. The details are on the form for all to see, have seen lot's of success reports on another forum I frequent. O2 have just unlocked mine on a simplicity 30 rolling sim.

If he has a monthly contract get him to get it fully unlocked by O2 - it won't cost him or you anything but a short wait. He only needs to fill in an online unlock request form.

Was the phone bought in the UK (locked to O2)? Or was it from abroad/Ebay? I think probably the latter as most if not all older locked iphones in the UK were O2 (special customers of other carriers were normally given unlocked iphones - rare but did happen). So would suggest using pwnage 3.1.4 to jailbreak/hacktivate and then install ultrasnow. I would doubt that a phone locked to O2 could jump across to T-Mobile!

Is the T-mobile an old sim, basically is it a 3G one?

Orange is now an official carrier in the UK, have you a vodafone sim to try. Other than that is the T-mobile working OK in any other phone.

If it's a payg phone then it needs to be over 12 months old before they will unlock it for the £15. If it is on an O2 monthly contract then it should be done free, as you would still have to fulfill your contract terms whether it was locked or not.

Should be OK as the carrier issue was where the firmware and saved baseband were out of synch. The new unlock is on the 3.1.2 firmware with the matching baseband. Look on cydia for carrier fix for pwnage jailbreak/unlock or just use MakeItMine to have your won.

Well done all. Nice to see team spirit depsite all the negative posts over the last few days. Geohot has put a nice text panel in blacksn0w to highlight the fact that it's free and should not be purchased from scammers. Good luck unlockers across the world. I'm a pwnage and blackra1n user but am seeking therapy :-)
