In one sense, this could be (and I stress, *could be*) what I Am Legend was supposed to be: an answer to the question, "what comes after us?". I only hope they don't wuss out and do a last-minute reveal à la I Am Legend: "surprise! there are humans left after all. Now don't you feel all warm and fuzzy again?"
