Confession time: I can’t say I like this book much. Since the main character became a mass murderer two chapters ago, I simply can’t identify with her or care what happens to her. In fact, The Fifth Season has come to suffer from Wuthering Heights syndrome: I dislike nearly all the characters, and consequently don’t really enjoy the story no matter how well-written it is. What’s more, there simply isn’t enough space left to resolve the plot within this volume. This isn’t really a trilogy, but a three-volume novel. I’ve decided against reading the other books.

I like this book more than Raising Steam, although that isn’t a very high bar, I suppose.
So, way back in Equal Rites we had the story of a girl who wanted to become a wizard. Now, Pratchett bookends it by giving us a boy who wants to become a witch.
