Big Hollywood : Lonewolf Diaries: Republicans Need to Grow a Sense of Humor

I'm not a big fan of demanding apologies from politicians, or comedians for that matter, for things they say. They generally mean exactly what they say and only come back and apologize after some sort of uproar. I think we should let them stand by their words and judge them in the future by them. I agree with you in principle, but I think the 3 examples you site are all different. 1. The Special Olympics joke was kinda cute, but I don't think it is a "politically correct" argument to say that the President of the United States shouldn't go on late night television and make a joke, while self deprecating, at retarded peoples expense. He should have apologized and did. I don't like Obama, but won't hold this against him. An offhand remark, though insensitive, "not outside the mainstream". What I did find offensive was the lack of a nightly joke for the following month at Obama's expense on Leno, Stewart, Maher and Letterman. IF GWB had done the same thing in 2002, we'd still be hearing about it on late night TV tonight. The best we'll get is probably Andrew Sullivan's latest investigation. Trying to determine whether Trigg Palen is actually retarded enough to bowl with Obama. 2. Wanda gets a total pass. Rush is a big boy and can take it. It wasn't that funny anyway or the worst thing ever said about him. 3. Making sex jokes about either a 14 or 18 year old girl, depending on the explanation you believe, is pretty much always in bad taste. I don't think Letterman should have apologized. He meant to tell a nasty joke directed at the Palins and use one of their daughters as the punch line. He isn't sorry he told the joke, he's sorry that it wasn't really funny and it pissed a bunch of people off. Again, don't demand an apology. He meant to offend the Palins and anyone who supports them, so just put that away. Any apology is fake, so why bother asking for one. If life were fair though, he'd be the butt of hundreds of jokes for the gaffe on the other late night shows and the joke itself highlighted on the network news shows. It won't, but get over it. If it's any consolation, he is getting some heat from groups like NOW. Let them demand the fake apology.
