GazetteOnline.com : Hlas column: Hawkeyes have just one real concern this week. Namely, the Arizona Wildcats

And the Hawkeyes lost in their first trip there too. But Rocky came back and won in the sequel. And the Hawks are returning to Arizona. We'll win this one too, just like the Stallion. :)

GazetteOnline.com : Veteran staff digs in as ailing Parker misses Arizona trip

Indeed, best wishes for Norm. I hope the University takes good care of him. I very much want to see him coach here for another 12 years, so I hope he takes the time that he needs to make a full recovery.

GazetteOnline.com : Kicking game still unsettled for Hawkeyes

I like Meyers a lot. Those touchbacks were certainly refreshing to see. But I do agree that the coverage teams need to improve. It is certainly plausible that after the past couple of years they were expecting that teams would field the ball at the 10 or 15, so they had less ground to cover and thus didn't have to run down field so quickly. But that is an adjustment that should be easy to make, so I hope that it is corrected. As to the place kicker competition... I wish during either the EIU or the ISU game we would have kicked a few field goals to get Mossbrucker back up to game speed. It didn't happen and I'm concerned about that element of our game. He did well on extra points during the ISU game; I listened to the EIU game so I wasn't able to watch him kick during that one. And Donahue is always a beast. I have no concerns there except for the punt coverage.

GazetteOnline.com : Ferentz: Norm Parker unlikely to make trip

Indeed, best wishes for Norm. He has several highly qualified assistants that should be able to run things nicely, so I'm not terribly alarmed at this news. But at the same time I hope he returns quickly. He is one of the top defensive coaches out there, and just a wonderful person as well. Get well soon Coach Parker!

GazetteOnline.com : Iowa Hawkeyes a 2-point favorite at Arizona

I also remember the last time Iowa played in the Orange Bowl prior to last season. And they made the corrections necessary to keep their team focused and disciplined. I expect no less from the coaches for their next trip into the desert. One thing about this staff, they are very good about learning from their mistakes and not repeating them. I expect a tough game in the first half, but I expect Iowa to open up a lead and win going away. I look to see Iowa make a statement in this game.

Marc, you have the ISUs ins and outs... how about the Hawks? I believe it was Tuesday when Coach Ferentz held his weekly press conference, and listed a number of guys as questionable. Among them was Prater. Any word on whether his hamstring is well enough to put him on the field? Tarp as well, he was listed as probable since they had cut down the bulb on his hand. Any update there? And Gettis' ankle... Anyways, if you have any game day updates, that would be great. :)

GazetteOnline.com : Big Ten gives Iowa 2 out of 3

"And while penn state, isnt technically a rivalry, it was really beginning to heat up as a series, and has really stirred the passions of hawk fans more than say the minnesota game has for probably the last 10 years. So IMO Iowa is really losing its two biggest CURRENT rivals" While the Penn State game has been exciting lately, Iowa and Penn St do not have a protected game. PSU would have rotated off of our schedule anyways. The current divisional split does not change that. The only thing it changes is that Wisconsin is no longer a protected game. Yes, that stinks, but I am absolutely excited about the UN game, and I think it will be a much bigger deal than the Wisconsin game. Hopefully in a few years when the conference goes to a 9 game conference schedule we can either pick Wisconsin up as another protected game, or we will simply be facing them more often due to the increased conference schedule. Purdue is a bore, yes. But look at the silver lining: most years it should be another guaranteed win. Those are nice.

GazetteOnline.com : Hlas column: Iowa scores very well in Big Ten's football division set-up

A big 12 team whining about a murderous schedule? Heh, welcome to the Big Ten. After enduring the years of listening to other conferences calling the Big Ten over rated, it strikes me as ironic and humorous listening to a team joining our conference and complaining about the schedule being overly tough. So again, welcome to the adult table. Try not to spill anything.

Wow. That is surprising to me. I spoke with him this spring and he seemed all fired up for the season to begin. While he wasn't 1st string, I would have thought that he'd be seeing playing time this year, especially if any injuries occurred.
GazetteOnline.com : Iowa has history with new divisional rivals

I agree. But likely we can't because Wisconsin and Minnesota have already declared their hate for each other, and demanded to be each others protected cross over. Hopefully in a couple of years we'll go to a 9 game conference schedule and we'll be able to beat the badgers every year. Until then, stuck with Purdue. As with you, I am ambivalent about playing Purdue. It doesn't register at all on the Oh-Wow-ometer.

Yes, but consider the following: * UN and PSU have a history of playing between Osborne and Paterno. * UN and PSU are (currently) the 2 outermost schools in the Big Ten * UN and PSU are both considered "powers" of the Big Ten (the other 2 are OSU and UMich) Given that UMich and OSU will have a protected cross over rivalry game, it makes sense to have the other 2 powers also meet every year. With the above, the UN-PSU game makes a lot of sense. Then throw in the money aspect; UN-PSU is going to generate a whole lot more interest nationally, which means $$$, than a game between PSU and MSU. And as you've mentioned, the PSU-MSU rivalry was concocted by the Big Ten and really hasn't taken off. They can take that trophy and flush it, and create a new trophy for the UN-PSU game. So while I would very much like to see Iowa-PSU as a protected cross over rivalry, I think at the end of the day they will match up the powers. And really, that should be a good game year in and year out.

GazetteOnline.com : Big Ten may have been scooped of its own scoop -- ESPN joins others who say Iowa's lumped in a footb

Rivalry week won't be at the end of the season, since it will be crossover games and you don't want to play a team in the other division with the possibility to meet them again the following week in the championship game. The final game of the season will almost certainly be intra-divisional games. So having a dud of a "rivalry" won't matter. If Iowa takes care of business and goes 12-0, beating Nebraska, Michigan, and whomever their 3 other divisional opponents are, and then go and win the Big Ten championship game, they will be headed to the (mythical) National Championship game. I'd prefer having a better "rivalry" game, but in terms of national standing it shouldn't matter since we'll have a conference championship game to open eyes, plus our yearly games against UN and UMich.

I would think PSU would get Nebraska. Illinois would get Northwestern. Which would leave MSU and Iowa to take either Purdue or Indiana. Any of those games are somewhere between 'meh' and 'whatever' for me. But it is what is left. I'd prefer that Iowa->PSU would be the crossover game, but I think the Big Ten will give it to Nebraska because of the potential ratings draw.

I love this division. Since it was already leaked that Iowa and Wisconsin would be split up, I think this is absolutely the best format for Iowa. Unless (until?) Michigan regains its competitiveness, it should hopefully turn into a 2-way divisional championship race between Iowa and Nebraska. This gives us the making of an intense border rivalry game, along with keeping our rivalry with Minnesota alive and well. Losing Wisconsin is unfortunate, but necessary and was already foretold. Hopefully in a few years when the conference goes to a 9 game conference schedule we'll be able to pick up the Wisconsin game as another protected cross-over rivalry. Then I think this format would be perfect.
