This situation has made me think a lot about the way I am. The way I am selfish and only think about myself and my close ones when it comes to something like 300,000 people dying. I am not saying that when 300,000 people die that I do not try to help them out or mourn over it but it is not the same when it is directly affecting me.
I also think that when people hear of a big tragic event that effects many of people and tons of people die that at first they help with the situation but then after they feel as if they have done their duty and just go on with their lives. Take Haiti for example, after the earthquake struck many of people donated money, helped with food, and helped with building new houses. Yet, after they gave their part then they just stopped and feel like they do not have to help out anymore. The people in Haiti are still in need. I think that for us this is kind of selfish. We help out because yes we feel bad but also to make ourselves feel more worthy and feel better about ourselves.
I do not think that when 300,000 people die its not that we "don’t" care. It is a situation that is too big for us and we feel that we cannot do anything about it. When a close family member does you go into a different mindset. If a person died that I didn’t know in that 300,000 group of people or if my mom died this weekend, of course I would be affected more if my mom died. I think it is just in our human nature to feel and care more to those who are closer to us.
16 years ago @ Race Relations Project - Want to Learn Chinese ... · 0 replies · +1 points
I think that students should be exposed to all different kinds of languages when they are in school. They make us pick one language to focus on but why not have a class that teaches a bunch of different languages because in the end we will be more diverse. I went through the same situation as this person did. In high school my Spanish teacher did not really care and was very easy so I passed easily and got A's on everything. Then when I came here I did not know anything and had to learn everything all over again.
The language mandarin is growing to be the most popular language and I think it is important for students to start learning it in order to be able to communicate with others. I just wish it were not so hard to learn a language. Now they have things like Rosetta stone, which sometimes I want to do because it seems like it is successful at teaching languages. I also think it is important for people to visit where the country or place where that language is spoken and stay there for a couple of months to learn the language fluently.
I am also not surprised that Spanish has remained constant. Pretty much everyone that I know has taken a Spanish class once before or knows some Spanish. Also, Spanish is similar to English so that it is easier for people to pick up.
I think it would be really wise for people in the business field and also everywhere to learn Chinese because China is growing in everything they do everyday.
On the other hand, learning mandarin in school should not be the main focus. It should be offered to students and strongly encouraged to take it because it could better them in the future but it is also really important to be more focused on the other subjects. Another question that could be asked is, why should we be focusing so much on learning Chinese, when so many people in the world still do not know English and they come to America not being able to communicate?!

I think that games with guns and killing people are bad enough. Now adding that you can rape someone, what have we come too? And to what extreme are we going to go to? I thought we have come along way with women’s rights but now seeing that video games are being made like this, it really pisses me off.
I was really shocked that the women they interviewed over skype from England was not fazed by this issue at all. The reporter asked her is she was offended and she said no, not at all. How can this not offend women? And as for guys do you think that girls should be offended by this? Also, for everyone wouldn’t it feel weird to "act" like you are raping a girl? What pleasure do you get out of that when you are playing this video game?
Also, what disturbs me about this is I know friends and woman who have been raped. Just think about those people who have been raped in real life, and now they see a virtual figure getting raped. They do not want to be reminded of those horrific times and that is just an insult towards them. I think that violence and sexual assault games should be banned. What ever happened to super Mario and those type games? They were competitive and childish but still fun at the same time. I would much rather play a video game like that then one with violence or rape.

Also, I am wondering if any black or African American person would call himself or herself Negro? And when they hear that word do they think about slaves? When I hear the word Negro I think it as an offensive word, so it shocked me that some colored people don’t think of it offensive. Maybe I think of it offensive if said is because whenever I have heard “negro” used it was used in a bad way.
Isn’t the U.S. Census supposed to be racially fair to everyone in the world? Obviously this has upset many of people in the world and something needs to be changed. If people can’t even identify themselves as who they are racially then how are they supposed to fill out this form? Also how true are the U.S. Census forms because if someone like I mentioned in my class has been struggling between picking Mexican and white what would she pick on the form. I guess what I am trying to get at is if people look at the form and identify themselves as having more than one racial background, then what one will they choose?
I disagree with the person who made this comment. Yes it is just a form or survey but we are in America and people should feel wanted and happy not rejected and confused. I agree that we should fill out the Census the best way we can and just pick something that best suits us, but there is always something that can be done to make some people feel better. They said until they come up with a way to keep everyone satisfied then just stop blaming people. If we don’t blame people or act out and say we are offensive then things will never change. People have to speak up for there to be change.
Also, are most of the people who are offended and upset about the U.S. Census not white? It seems that most white people although they might have some Indian in them they are not disturbed as much as black or colored people. Why is the Census so much more offensive to people who are not white or is that just the way I see it?

I really don’t understand why women cannot speak out having a "period" because right when that word is mentioned around a male they go ewwwww don’t talk about that that’s disgusting. I will admit I did think it was gross when Sam said that he asked his wife after if she could leave it in the toilet so he could look at it. I don't think the whole thing of having a period is beautiful but the aspects that come along with it are beautiful. Of course having a child is one of the greatest miracles in the world, so it is weird why males get so uncomfortable about the subject. I wonder if one day talking about periods will be a normal thing.
I know when I am around girls we will be like ahh man I have my period this sucks or whatever someone says but its like we cannot say anything around guys because it is disgusting to them. Even talking about tampons is gross. Like you always here from girl’s ughh I hope when I get my period for the first time that my dad doesn’t have to go buy me tampons, because that is so embarrassing. Or I hear a lot of times in marriages men are like im not getting you tampons. What is such a big deal?
I also wonder if it were guys who had periods if it wouldn’t be as big of a deal. Like I always here that guys say that girls only pee they don’t do anything else. Deep down they know that we do but they are like im just going to imagine that they don’t. Everyone is human and we all do the same things. Guys can talk open freely to there friends about all of the disgusting stuff but when a girl says something is it because it is unlady like? So I think if it were guys saying ohh man I just got my period it would be totally different.
I also agree with the person that made this video that saying menstrual would be a better way to put it instead of bleeding. I also agree that yeah it sucks to have a period it is also a beautiful thing because I am the one who is able to have a child one day and God gave me these privileges. So why isn’t having a period like a lucky thing? I am interested to hear what guys have to say about this video and all of these posts and I hope they are not to embarrassed or uncomfortable talking about the subject.
16 years ago @ Race Relations Project - Prom or No Prom: Just... · 0 replies · +1 points
So why are schools banning a prom because they think other kids are going to react in a bad way towards them. Shouldn’t it be up to the girl who wants to go if she wants to deal with the negativity? Does the school think that they are helping her out by protecting her?
One of my older sisters is a lesbian and if this happened to her I know she would be really upset. I don’t understand why they would cancel an entire prom because one girl wants to bring another girl as a date. This just doesn’t make sense to me at all! It actually makes me really mad, and maybe because I have someone in my family who is gay, but I still think that this issue needs a lot of work if this is still happening in High schools. She can’t enjoy her prom because she is interested in taking a girl? I agree with nms5201 when they say, Lesbian and gay couples are not a secret phenomenon, students are aware of these relationships. I’m sure that everyone in the school new that she was lesbian before the prom and that she was going to take a girl anyways. So why don’t they kick her out of the school? She can be in school and be lesbian and show it around campus but when it comes to a school dance she is not allowed to show it?
I hope that things change fast, because this is not acceptable. Hopefully one day all lesbian and gays have the freedom to do whatever they want.
16 years ago @ Race Relations Project - What's With the Theme ... · 0 replies · +1 points
If people think that themed parties are usually all about race lets think of this one. A lot of times men at Penn State say lets dress up as sorority girls. They wear short shorts and have fake boobs with them hanging out and a ton of make up. Yeah it is all fun in games but I think we just need to laugh it off. Instead of looking at is as oh they are making fun of me, I think people should just laugh because all it is, is a stereotype.
I agree with jflanagan37 when they said that "Jersey Shore" is the new themed parties and I agree that people could get offended by this because not all people from Jersey are like this but they are the ones who acted like that on the show. So why cant we have themed parties that make fun of them, its not like we are physically hurting someone when we dress up and wear a poof in our hair.
There are many different parties that people can have, and themed parties are just a way for people to come up with something creative, have fun, and laugh about it. I do not see much harm in it. Maybe to me I just dont really care because I think it is all fun in games. If someone says lets have a themed "hoes and bros" Im not like ughhh there is no way I am doing that because that is degrading to me. Its just a fun thing to do. Also what is so different about having a themed party or dressing up on Halloween. People still dress up like gangsters on Halloween but is this a day where it is acceptable, or not? In the stores they sell these kinds of costumes so what are they supposed to do not sell the costumes because some people think it is degrading against their race?

Another point to bring up is I think the court also has a problem with sexism. For example, my ex boyfriend got caught with public drunkenness as Penn State. He had his license taken away from him for 6 months and also had to pay a big fine. On the other hand one of my girl friends has gotten six (yes this is a lot) times caught with public drunkenness. In her case, she never got her license taken away and this happened at Penn State here as well. I think the court system is really messed up based on racism, sexism, and money. Because how can a male with one time get caught for public drunkenness get his license taking away compared to a girl that had that happen to her six times and never get her license taken away??
Money can bring people a long way. For example, look at celebrities like Paris Hilton. She has committed acts like DUIs and has been able to pay money to bail her out of it or at least keep her out of jail for lesser days. This is unfair to a normal colored person or even white person who has committed the same act but does not have the money or fame to bail themselves out of the situation.
I also like way mlp5180 said about race and money.. "Poorer people may not be able to afford an attorney or pay for bail. Due to financial reasons, Judges may be less likely to drop charges. So it may seem that race is the primary decision maker in how the Criminal Justice System functions when in fact it maybe more of an income discrepancy. " I agree with this totally. I feel like a lot of times people do not have the money in their pockets or even have the family to help them and bail them out. When the people are in front of the judge, the judge knows somewhat of their background and if one person standing in front of them has more money than the other they are automatically going to think that the one who is more poor is the one who did commit the crime. I think that the court system is really unfair, but also in everyday life everything always boils down to money and even race.

I just think it is crazy how we have gotten to the point where there is an unrealistic doll that can meet all of your sexual needs and also be able to communicate with you. I agree with ctm154 about how they say if a man needs to buy a robot to satisfy his needs then that would be a slap in the face in the relationship. If my boyfriend bought this robot I would be pissed. I would think I was not a good enough woman for him.. like how could a robot be better than me? But then there is another way we have to look at this... Is buying a robot the same thing as your man going to a strip club or watching porn on the internet? Looking at it this way I would think it is pretty much the same thing, the only difference is the toy is not a real person.
Also, who has 7,000 dollars lying around to buy a sex toy? The world seems to be doing just fine with having relationships and getting their sex from their partners. I also agree with sna5022 that no matter how good this robot looks or acts there is no way that a robot can replace a real female. I think a lot of females after reading this article get offended because they don’t understand why men have such different needs than women. I’m sure a lot of guys who read this post think hmm why not try it, it is probably good. But then when I imagine a man doing this I think to myself this is disgusting why is he using a robot!?
The bottom line is men are obviously buying these products.. but women are also. Another thing that I wonder is are most of the people who are buying Roxxy gay or lesbian or bi? It would make more sense to me if someone that was bi bought this toy because they could experiment or even use it in the bedroom? I don’t know maybe now I am just making excuses because I think this concept is ridiculous!
I do agree that men and women have different needs in life. But are our needs soooo different that men have to buy a robot for 7,000 dollars to meet those needs. Like I said, I hope a robot never replaces a real life woman.

Although this does not really influence me, I think it is important that this language is remembered and brought back. Maybe somebody out there does speak this Bo language. How are we so sure that this language is gone forever?? Just because one person died, that means the language is totally gone? I thought it was interesting what arc5169 said about the speaker of the Chemehuevi tribe. He said that now he cannot communicate with anyone else in his language beside himself. I can’t even imagine that. I take communication for granted. Yes, I would love to speak to people in different languages but on an everyday basis I can communicate to pretty much anyone I want here in America with English.
It was also interesting what arc5169 said about the tribe member on how they said that he was going to teach people how to learn the language but no one ever comes around. This answered my question from up to. So do people not care enough for other cultures to know want to learn the language or learn about them? I never even think about learning one of these languages. The cool thing to me would be if I did learn the Bo language or even Johnny Hills language I could be the one to pass it around to the rest of the world and keep it alive. Realistically, I am not going to do that but I wish someone would. I am glad that this topic was brought up because I have never thought about this in my life. Its like saying the last person who spoke English died and then no one would ever hear that language ever again. I know that is not going to happen but that would be crazy!
It also makes me think when I heard that half of the 7,000 languages would not be around anymore. Is the only reason for this occurrence because people are dying and no one else wants to hear? Or are there only certain languages that we as America put out to other cultures that say what is right and what is wrong, so then the other cultures adopt our language? I don’t know this topic is very confusing to me but also interesting.
