There was a roller rink where I grew up that had a giant skate kids would ride in for their birthday parties. A bunch of little kids wearing roller skates would try to push that heavy fucker around the rink while the birthday kid sat in it like a monarch. The roller rink would play a very slow version of the birthday song while the children toiled. The song had a huge gap of silence for the toilers/party goers to scream the name of the birthday monarch.
I desperately wanted a birthday party there.

A yet to be used stage in a theater warmed by stage lights.
Gel pen ink on stiff paper.
The inside of your mom's purse.
Night market smell.
Old dog that is not yet a stinky old dog.
Gasoline dispensed at a marina.

That advice is amazing! Just splendid!
(As an overly familiar American, I often use "Hey" in emails because "Dear" is kind of weird to me now. How is calling a stranger dear, much less one who is offended by the use of "hey," accurate?)

Yes!! I'm half Taiwanese, and on a trip to Mexico the local merchants kept asking me if I spoke Spanish (but never my driven-snow white husband.) Every time I responded with "I'm sorry" before "no." I felt so guilty, even though it was a tourist town and everyone's English would be ten times better than any Spanish I tried to pick up.
More than just being an ignorant foreigner who didn't learn the language first, I felt like I kept disappointing several people a day by not meeting their expectations for supposedly-Latina Squishalicious.

I liked her book because she's all, "I love stuff. This stuff makes me so happy. If you love that dirty coffee can filled with broken glass, keep it."
Though I will admit, your reaction is totally legit.
