Big Hollywood : 'Captain America': Little Hero, Big Heart

Great review Jaci. I would agree with you and enlarge on two things. First, Red Skull is comic book evil, not evil evil. Compare his scene in the village with the Col Landa in the farmhouse in Inglorious Basterds. He was EVIL. The second issue was the heckling Steve got in the FOB. Rather than being a criticism of the troops, it was a true response of combat troops to a REMF (look it up). It was also a critical factor in his development as a character who always wanted to do the right thing for his country and the Army. I enjoy it thoroughly - even with the romance interrupts.

Big Peace : OMG: There Are Gays in the Military

Re: blood. Not at all. All medical care meets or exceeds the standards required in civilian settings. The issue is that testing may not discover the antigens early on. This would not be an issue in a stateside situation because you have large blood supplies. But in a crunch, you put out the call and folks line up.

Big Peace : OMG: There Are Gays in the Military

Speaking as a retired military physician, there are two reasons why I am opposed to this opinion - and neither have anything to do with what happens in the shower. First, there is a real issue of good order and discipline. There have traditionally been standards of decorum which are expected of all uniformed members. PDA's (public displays of affection) are one thing which can get members in trouble as that shows a lack of restraint and awareness that they are representing their service (translation: it looks bad when you are in uniform and you are playing tonsil hockey on the street). Those rules won't change with the end of DADT. What will change is that we will have some gay members who believe that any restraint placed on them by the system is a civil rights violation. I expect they would be supported by the full force of the ACLU and others. This will make the whole concept of decorum impossible to manage. Second, and this will evolve as the science does, the uniformed force has always been a "walking blood bank." If there is an urgent need for blood, you may go out and draw from whoever is around rather than waiting for the Red Cross to deliver. And since various bloodborne diseases that have higher prevalence in the gay community may not be identifiable in the early stages, it is possible that a service member could receive infected blood. Neither are absolute bars to throwing out DADT, but we sure better be prepared to deal with them.

Big Hollywood : Top 25 Left-Wing Films: #22 - 'Sneakers' (1992)

All the President's Men may not be a Leftists film (I think it is). But it is one of the prime reasons why our current news culture is so bad. Prior to "Woodstein," reporters were craftsmen who did their work in the shadows using the How, What, Where, When, and Who. They were (mostly) fair, and tried to let the story tell itself. After ATPM, reporters became rock stars. The flash, the byline, the headline all trumped truth and the whole story. This was the slippery slope that led to Rather and Geraldo. Journalism is much worse off because of this movie.

Big Hollywood : Bristol Palin Transforms Left: They Now Favor Rewarding Merit, Oppose Voter Fraud

Who are you kidding? DWTS is not Olympic Ice Skating where a small handful of elitist judges predetermine who should win and then jigger their scores to make it happen. This is a popularity contest. Yes, the dancing is important, but in the end, it depends on who can motivate folks to vote. I agree that Brandy is a better dancer, but her partner was such a jerk, people probably voted for Bristol just to punish him.

Big Hollywood : 'Newsweek': 'Undercovers' Canceled By NBC Because America Can't Handle 'Super-Negroes'

What about The Wire? One of the very best series ever put out. And it showed blacks and whites as real, flawed individuals. Maybe the reason why Undercover failed is the same as why our politics is so messed up. Liberals can't talk about race without following the scripted narrative.

Haven't seen EPL, not going to. Saw both Salt and Expendables. The big difference, IMHO, is that the former was totally predictable whereas the latter surprised you. You could see almost every stunt coming in Salt. In the Expendables, there were a few that you didn't expect. And then you see the trope of the traitor within the team. Both of them had this, but in Salt, it was paint by numbers. In Exp, at the end you said, "cool, didn't see that coming." Not saying either are great movies, but when things are blowing up, it's nice to see that the director is trying to give you more than just the pyro.

Big Peace : Politics, fraud, and PTSD

Years ago, I knew one of the senior researchers for the Agent Orange injuries. He said that NO ONE wanted them to complete their research. The issue was not about whether it was a valid syndrome or not. The issue was that if they had conclusive evidence which showed a true causative effect, then you could define who would get a disability benefit and who was not qualified. They ended by throwing it out and deciding the all veterans of the Viet Nam era (you didn't have to get sprayed or even be deployed to SEA) would be eligible for VA treatment of prostate cancer, which was supposed to be a side effect. Anyone care to guess the percentage of Viet Nam era vets will eventually get prostate cancer... It wasn't about the science; just the benefit.
