That's an excellent point and one which is ignored by those who say the US should be more like Scandinavian countries. The truth is that they are MUCH more homogeneous in terms of culture. When you have people who share the same goals, ideals, language, background, history, etc., the members of that society are much more likely to cooperate.

Libunatics are thrilled that the shooter in Norway wasn't another Bush-hating liberal like Jared Lee Loughner. They use the atrocities committed by one person acting alone to smear all non-communists. I'd like to hear libunatics support for Norway's lack of the death penalty. If just one or two other people on the island had been carrying, this may have ended much sooner and with far fewer lives lost.

I agree for the most part, but because about 85% of people are covered by insurance, there really are very few who actually pay cash. Among the ~15% who are not insured, many of them are at the healthiest time of their lives (which is why they opt not to participate in an employer-sponsored health care plan). I've known a number of younger people who do not sign up for insurance until they know they'll have a need, such as when they plan to have a baby. Finally, the cash price listed by hospitals and doctors is very often unrealistically high. They know they aren't going to get that price. So, when they bill someone for cash, they can elect to "cut the bill" and still get the same money they would have gotten from an insurance company. Or, they can write off part of the bill as a bad debt, which helps on their taxes.
