Sharpton and Lawrence ODonnell are not trying to discredit Mr. Cain's principles or refute his ideas and policy suggestions.
They are TERRIFIED that a Republican, in this case a black man, might appeal to African-Americans prone to vote Democratic thereby peeling some of them away from Obama. This is a segment of the electorate taken for granted by the Democrats forever and is a solid block for the Dems..
Sharpton and ODonnell are trying to discredit Mr. Cain's blackness, if you will. They must insinuate that he does not care about their plights: that he didn't participate in the Civil Rights movement(ODonnell), or that Mr. Cain, questions the legitimacy of Obama's presidency and his actual birthplace. Birtherism is associated with racists, as you know - so, in effect they'd like to pin the label of self-loathing on Mr. Cain, or that he detests his own "blackness".
This is just a theory, but not far off the mark.
MSNBC is a gaggle of haters - pure and simple.
