Sundriedrainbow: Did you ever read the Obsidian Trilogy? That was a co-write works by Lackey and another author- the magic system in there always seemed to be pretty good but it has been a fair number of years since I've read the books.

Hell even Gershom says that she did really good work back in the day, I think it was in Riots. She might have been more of an upstanding Dog once and now burnout/stress is amping up. I always read Shales comment about hitting her son as being full of guilt and pain. She wants a job where she can be safe (I do wonder why a Desk job isn't available, maybe she's not of high enough status, or nothing's available, or the money isn't good) and this is what works for her now. I really wonder what ended up happening to her. Bit character syndrome at its finest!

To me it looked like Beka and Goodwin noticed because they are freshly new (or at least returning after a long while) to the city and might be a bit more alert and aware of their surroundings because of it. Someone who's been in the city for awhile probably won't notice Haden following them around since there are so many people milling about in the city.

That and stories like the Shadow Snake had been going about for ages, the parent's might not have believed them. Though in the medieval era didn't families try and have as many kids as possible to help with daily life? Still, that was in mostly rural areas right? In the Lower City extra kids seem to be only seen as more mouths to feed : (
