I've never been a victim of crime in Costa Rica, but maybe that's because I stay away from ex-pats whenever possible. Swear to God, you can't talk to an American ex-pat for five minutes before they're trying to sell you some real estate they were sucker enough to buy. And the heat and bugs? Not bad at all -- especially at higher elevations.

Actually it's pretty easy to infer what Romney was doing: 1. Set up Bermuda shell corp where only his IRA and the trust he set up for his kids could invest. His IRA and the trust buy 50% of the "stock" in the Bermuda corp for about $1,000. Bain pays the Bermuda corp $250 million for "services". Ta-daaaa! $250 million in an IRA and a trust fund while paying $0 in taxes. Then, to make it even better: 2. Arrange to borrow living expenses from a bank -- to the tune of a couple million dollars a year. Live off that. It's not income, so it's not taxed. Pay $3% interest on the loan, rather than 15% capital gains tax you'd pay if you tapped the IRA or trust fund. That's how it's done. Every day. The super rich really don't pay much in taxes at all, no matter what the IRS statistics say. The vast majority of the money they spend isn't classified as income of any sort, so the taxes they do pay on what HAS to be classified as income looks reasonable.
