I liked the idea of JCB as Royce quite a lot, but this new fella doesn't look unfitting either. Certainly somewhat different version, but fitting anyway.

Winter Is Coming : Kristian Nairn is Hodor

Well, no. Admittedly it's obvious that WW2 influenced Tolkien while he was writing, how could it not have, but he started already before the war (though got to the juicy bits only after the war had started) and personally he was much more influenced by WW1, in which he fought and lost many a friend. WW1 was the Great War of his generation. In WW2 Tolkien only served as an air-warden (and somewhat unnecessary one, as Oxford was never much bombed). So saying that WW2 would have inspired all of modern fantasy literature is quite a misconception, and I don't think it's even a very popular one. On topic, I think Nairn will be great. He sure has the looks, and I believe in his acting abilities too, even having seen the mediocre video before.

Has it been mentioned, maybe already long ago, that one can vote Game of Thrones as the "Most Anticipated New Show of 2010-2011 Season" in something called "Tubey Awards" by Television Without Pity: http://www.televisionwithoutpity.com/tubeys/nomin...

Maybe, possibly, they thought that younger and less rugged Will would be more easily symphatised in the execution scene, making more emotional impact?

There's quite definitely Waymar Royce behind Gared, they're back-to-back and drawing swords. Interesting. Could it even be that the roles of Gared and Will have been changed so that Gared dies at the hands of Others and Will is beheaded by Ned? Don't know why they would do such a thing, but if Gared and Royce are fighting back-to-back on foot, and all we see of Will is on horseback, possibly fleeing... On another note, it seems that Ice has a sheath that has a lifesize wolf's head on it, so that the sword is drawn from the mouth of the wolf. How epic is that?

I wondered the same thing. But maybe Starks would wrap some leather strip around the handle when going to battle, other times when its more like a ceremonial sword it would have the bare wood? Not sure if that would be convenient in any way or even possible, though.

Winter Is Coming : Quick hits: Dothraki update, Sophie on Sansa, Sam shortlisted

Good news! I hope that the fact I like both Catelyn and Sansa will finally help me understand women and someday "get laid". Or maybe I'm just the sad exception :( Seriously though, I suspect that if people would have a few years break between books two and three, as I did, they might like both Catelyn (undead one excluded) and Sansa better. I remember that back in first books, I was somewhat bothered by Sansa's ability to make all the wrong choices (curiously, Ned's ability to make all the wrong choices just made him cool, but of course the reasons behind their actions were quite very different). But since I returned to the series, Sansa became one of my favourite characters.

Winter Is Coming : Emilia Clarke is Daenerys

If you think that Dany is "vulnerable" for about 2 episodes and then turns into "a Queen", I doubt if we have read the same book. Obviously her self-confidence starts to rise at about that time, but it is still very much on a budding state the whole first book - all the way into the pyre scene, and even after, though in lesser quantity. So the whole season very much needs an actress who can show (also) her vulnerability, and it doesn't hurt even in the later seasons. Otherwise I don't want to argue with you about the indivual actresses' abilities, because that is obviously completely moot.

Winter Is Coming : Hodor?

I don't think Hodor's actor has to be much trained in acting (luckily, for there wouldn't be that great pool of fitting Olivier-winning giants), but it is still unfortunate that Nairn didn't even try to act any but one emotion during that tape. If it doesn't ask for award-winning acting, it anyway requires somewhat emotive face and a spectrum of different sounding "hodors". There's really no point in just turning around time after time when someone shouts his name... The joke gets old pretty quickly. On the other hand as Nairn didn't try, he didn't exactly fail either. So depending on how many people have tried out for Hodor, Nairn may get a new chance to show his qualities. If there were many, someone's bound to be better prepared and thus be picked without another round.

Winter Is Coming : Emilia Clarke is Daenerys

Well, there was quite overwhelmingly positive feedback to these Dany casting news much before there was any kind of opinion expressed about her in the front page post, even back before it was sure if Emilia Clarke was the right Emilia Clark/e. Original post about casting has 146 comments as of now (more than 100 before this new thread), and it does not voice any opinion what so ever about the actress. So it's hard to see how could it have been dominating the conversation, when it came after?

Winter Is Coming : Hodor?

Besides his height, Hodor has to be strong - after all, he has to be able to carry Bran with ease, not only in the final product we will see (hurray!) but also in every take they might have to take and maybe sometimes in-between. Not every uncannily tall person is fitted for that. And besides on another practical side, farther above the ground Bran-actor is sailing the bigger the risks are getting. We don't want him to fall (again)... So I don't think the tallest person available is the best option, we have to take in account other aspects.* * including ability to act, obviously

Not bad 'shops, especially the left one, but I hope the make up department will lighten her brows too, not only the hair (or wig, what ever). Dany shouldn't look like she dyed her hair silver only yesterday.

Well, one of the few things we _do_ know is that the casting people chose her over Elena Satine. They might have made a mistake, such things happen. But also it's possible that Elena just wasn't as good. Such things happen. I rather trust the Nina Gold & co. than someone in the internet who starts by calling the opposing party (girls or) sex-offenders. That's somewhat negative attitude to begin with.
