Yep, so angry with them. Just as the Tory party is disintegrating, let's create a complete vacuum! Have had a tension headache for days and can barely concentrate on anything.

Yep. Studying Art History made me want a bunch of 'skeletons doing silly things' tattoos, and this has reminded me. Thanks!

The Toast : Why Everyone Is Attracted To Baristas (It's Because Of Late-Stage Capitalism)

This is true of everyone who works at the coffee shop next to the bar I used to work at, especially one of em. My fellow barpeople and I were far more surly and so did not have the same effect.

The Toast : A Slightly Subdued Open Thread

This is a great idea - if anyone is (like me) perpetually low on funds + time and stuck in northern england I know a delightful valley where some committed hippies live, and you can stay there and go swimming in the river and meet some very bolshy chickens. I'd really like to meet anyone local!

The Toast : The Eight Types of Roommates You'll Have Before You Turn 30

Wheey, I've just moved into a shared apartment for the first time in a while and happily it is big enough that if one dude is going to be slobby in one part of it I can give myself the gift of not caring. Trying to encourage other roommate to do the same, as they appear to have fallen out. "You're never going to change a slob" - repeat, forever.

I've just moved to Liverpool for work and it is a big emotional day here, unconscionable that it's taken so long (nearly as long as I've been alive!) for the families of the 96 to get some sort of justice. Waiting with a kind of nervous weariness for those who were most cruel at the time to react, or not. And if you want to have a little cry http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-new... You'll Never Walk Alone is a tearjerker at the best of times...

A colleague just leant me 'Blood Child and other stories' this very morning! At the gallery where we work we're going to be holding a conference to coincide with an as yet unannounced exhibition by an artist who allegedly has an amazing collection of Black Sci-fi, it's all pretty exciting! I really want to get hold of the Xenogenesis Trilogy too though. Now going to forward on the above link..

I can't remember the first one, probably 'sparkle face' or something, but the favourite is 'Suzie_Cucumber', an allusion to Suzie Creamcheese, invented to troll boys on a local 'music scene' forum when I was 15ish.

SAME! I think I've just made myself like everything and now I do, but still couldn't eat natto. Also being calorie obsessed when I was a young teen may have meant I've broken my like and dislike associations for foods.

The Toast : Your Dad is Still Your Dad: On Family and Alcoholism

Thank you for this! I really struggle to know how to talk about my Dad and seem to have settled on "he was a troubled man" - a while ago some friends were making a zine on the theme of parents that I wanted to submit to but had a panic attack instead, I think it's healing to read other people's vaguely similar experiences.

The Toast : Friday Open Thread

Sort of food related, yesterday I had a mysterious allergic reaction for the first time in my life and my face swelled up! The only unusual thing I had eaten was a large tangerine-like peelable orange fruit that I can't remember the name of but from hereon will be known as the allergen pod. Then when I got back from work a late birthday present had arrived and it was Texts from Jane Eyre! Then, today I was working in a local pub that I sometimes go to when it's hard to concentrate at home because it's usually quiet in the day, and there was a funeral in the back room, and somebody from the funeral very kindly and firmly gave me some chocolate tart.

This is true! They're also a lot cheaper and more difficult to scoop the middle out of than a squash. I nearly got a big green pumpkin-looking squash instead but it was EIGHT TIMES the price. The hairy bits on them look extra creepy too.

Everywhere was obviously sold out of pumpkins, so ended up getting some turnips and carving them after all! Turnip soup tomorrow, turnip is not a very nice smell. Also slowly coming to terms with the fact that nobody is going to come trick or treating down my road because it is a dead end and I bought loads of sweets, what a shame. <img src="https://scontent-a-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/10730973_10152871926078010_4887773456885737162_n.jpg?oh=c8ca2b36f63255b7c82c710640d3082b&oe=54F4B33E">

The Toast : Link Roundup!

"Obviously this makes me feel like a terrible person" yes, listen to that feeling. I have enjoyed reading about everyone's Halloween traditions, and would like to add that when I was little my parents who were confusing British hippies that liked to do upbringing experiments would not let me carve a pumpkin as that was not traditionally difficult and Lancastrian enough, so I had to do a turnip, and one year decided it'd be a good idea to give out parched peas (a traditional Lancashire dish of mushy black peas with salt and vinegar on) we were not popular. Oh and Halloween Dad: one year my Dad took great glee in opening the door and yelling "I EAT BABIES"..."Jelly Babies" at the swiftly retreating children. This year I've just moved to a quant and spooky town in the country side full of families and am in charge of my own vegetables!
