Great film with some great quotable lines and great characters. "Shut up, Donnie!" "The Dude abides." "That rug tied the whole room together."

From the article, about the ACORN scandal and accompanying video: "ACORN was embarrassed when some of its workers seemed too helpful..." Err, a little bit of an understatement, methinks.

Big Hollywood : Today's Inconvenient Truth: Al Gore Lied, James J. Lee Died

No, I didn't miss the point.  It matters not whether you are telling the truth or not.  If some nut latches onto it and attempts to injure other people or themselves, they are a troubled person doing horrible things.  The truth of the matter is not the point.  For example, the people who shoot abortion doctors and bomb their clinics, are anti-abortion advocates responsible for the actions of these people?  My point is disturbed people will find causes to attach themselves to whether it be eco terrorism or the superiority of one race over another or one religion attempting to dominate another, etc;

Great article, Mr. Nolte. But I will have to disagree with you on one point: this tragedy could have still happened even if this disturbed person hadn't latched onto the eco-lies of "An Inconvenient Truth". He might have just pledged himself to some other cause, real or imagined. Troubled people are still troubled people. Even so, I am sick of this alarmist entertainment posing as "pseudo science" that Gore and his ilk parade around. Recorded human history has only existed about 3000-5000 years, right? The changes they talk about in their models took thousands or millions of years to affect the changes they claim are happening now. How are they sure that this is not some normal, cyclic pattern the earth goes through? As smart as we humans think we are, we are constantly being shown that what we think we know is wrong...until it's proven that the thing we were wrong about is actually right, five years later. Hell, we don't even know all the ends and outs of our own bodies, as we constantly learn from the medical community. I forget, are eggs bad for us or good for us right now?

That hasn't stopped Obama from blaming the previous administration for his woes (unless it's an off handed and very hypocritical comment on Bush having the right vision for Iraq) or others for slamming the Tea Party or Glenn Beck or Christians or conservatives or any other entity they hold with disdain. Give these people a platform and they will use it to push whatever agenda they hold dear or bash those on the other side of the ideological fence.

Watching his first film on the above two links, specifically the second clip, I almost expected the girl to bust through the wall with the walker and calmly say to the tank robot: "Get away from him, you b***ch!" Interesting side note about Al Matthews (the actor who played Apone): he was the first black Marine in the 1st Marine Division in Vietnam, to be meritoriously promoted to the rank of sergeant. One of my favorite sci-fi/action films. Really enjoy this series of columns, keep 'em coming!

Big Hollywood : 'Lights Off, Camera Off, Action Now!': Andrew Breitbart's Eco-Challenge to James Cameron and Hollywo

Absolutely. Hence the tactic of crying racism or fascism or any other heavy-handed, broad generalization. And yes, I agree, the fault is primarily with the left. But in the name intellectual honesty, one must admit there are those few on the right that engage in the same kind of name calling and hyperbole. And no, I don't think "tit-for-tat" is justification for this.

Big Hollywood : Maybe 1994 Wasn't the Best Movie Year Ever

I know it's almost the expected answer to say "1939" but it is really hard to disagree with that assessment. Some examples: Gone With The Wind, Rules of The Game, The Wizard of Oz, Stagecoach, Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, Ninotchka, The Women, Goodbye Mr. Chips, Beau Geste, Dark Victory, Gunga Din, Destry Rides Again, Drums Along The Mohawk, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Golden Boy, Wuthering Heights, Young Mr. Lincoln... Another year, 1941, could certainly qualify as well. Citizen Kane, Sergeant York, 49th Parallel, Dumbo, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, How Green Was My Valley, The Devil and Daniel Webster, The Maltese Falcon, The Lady Eve, Suspicion, Sullivan's Travels... I could do some more research and find comparable years but these two years stuck out for me.

Big Hollywood : Meet Some of the People Jon Stewart Trashes as Bigots

Interesting that you invoke the Alamo. I was thinking the other day about other instances where it would be inappropriate to put something near a memorial. Like putting a monument or museum glorifying Santa Anna near the Alamo or a Timothy McVeigh statue near the site of the Federal building in Oklahoma City. There's no way. The furor raised would be deafening. Even with the PC sensitivity of the immigration issue and after 174 years have passed since the siege of the Alamo, as a native Texan, I can tell you it wouldn't happen.

Didn't read the book but did have the misfortune of witnessing the televised train wreck. I wanted to stick a pencil in my brain. I just remember thinking "So, what if Ilsa flew back to Casablanca and tried to hook up with Rick again? But they shifted the story to Marrakesh and made Rick a whiny jerk and Ilsa was actually a war profiteer. I figured Leonardo DiCaprio could play Rick and Glenn Close could play Ilsa. Wouldn't that be great?" Please Hollywood, continue to have no original ideas.
