A new Longmont sales tax for affordable housing? Are you out of your minds? Not even liberal tax-happy Boulder is that crazy. Such a tax would be crushed at the polls with a great majority of residents and business people being opposed. Don't forget the total sales tax in Longmont was raised to an all-time high 8.26% with the new county flood recovery tax last November. The last thing we need is more sales tax for a welfare-like program. And as Sarah Levison noted, sales tax is terribly regressive--the poor man pays just as much on basic necessities as the rich man.

I look at mayoral leadership in times of crisis when the city really needs calming and direction. Coombs was invisible to the public for several days after the Sept. '13 flood and was also not present at the city (Mike Butler) press conference following the two violent stabbing incidents in Longmont this past March.
