The Christmas star was reconfigured into an Easter Cross by the Chamber of Commerce, in 1948, then was changed back and forth between the star and the cross every year through 1969. At that time, the City of Boulder determined that the cross was a religious symbol, but the star was not. I'm just glad the star survived, as it's part of Boulder's history and culture.

Just to keep the history straight, and according to post office records, both the Ward Post Office and the Gold Hill Post Office were founded on the same day -- January 13, 1863.

The university vs. the prison is a myth that has been perpetuated over time. If you read the proceedings from the Territorial Legislature, you will see that Boulder put in its bid for the university the very first year –– in 1861. Boulder was never was considered for the penitentiary.
