And as a child who was the victim at age 13 (which is in my opinion the equivalent today of a child of 10, as I lived in a very protected and unrealistic era), I think I can honestly and realistically state that it is less difficult to get over the actions that were caused by the predator, than it is to get over the actions of those who try to make that person "pay". For those who feel that the perpetrator should be put to death by any means, I'd like to put in the perspective of someone who wanted my molester to die, when I was a child. As I grew older, and recognized how difficult it was to not believe I was somehow responsible for his actions, and to live and react as though I was guilty of something (I knew not what, but was certain of my guilt) ... I can't even imagine what it would have taken to outgrow the belief that I had also somehow been responsible for him being killed. To find someone guilty and have them be sentenced to death through the court system would POSSIBLY be easier to get over. It sounds as though Sandusky at least recognizes the gravity of the charges against him. It had seemed that he was presuming that his great connections and past popularity would give him a pass on this. One would hope that his discomfort in court doesn't simply mean that he's embarrassed to have this drug into court, but that he actually recognizes that what he did was terrible. It seems to me that too often people are charged with crimes that they only dispute because it may mean jail time and a record. It would make my heart happier if coming face to face with the horror of their actions could make them feel shame. Embarrassment is good as a start. It just isn't enough. And being found guilty is barely better. I'd like to see Sandusky weighted down with sorrow for the pain he created. And I feel better having recognized all that, and wish only that I'd been aware of it while it was happening. I did eventually learn how much I owed Mother for that. It wasn't in her lifetime, but I am grateful. And this is what I've learned. A single horrible event is not tantamount to destroying a life. What is far more likely to be destructive, is pretending it didn't occur, leaving a child to wonder and fear, not bothering to notice that even though you never put it into words, the child felt he or she had something terribly wrong with them that they had caused such a thing to happen. It is the REST of the family and society and life, that matters. He told me of it, assuming that I already knew. We talked at length about it, because my father had sexually abused me but had stopped and never (truly never) did it again. But I had always known that he hadn't changed, except that my mother became his jailer and Dad wanted his family enough to accept that. I asked my neighbor how it happened that HE had stopped and he made it clear that the "urge" never left ... but that recognizing that he'd HURT those children made him able to stop acting on the urge. But he protects himself by not attending functions in which there are children. None. He lives within his 4 walls and among people who are aware of his past and not going to place him in situations where he has to clamp down on his own urges. If something occurs within the apartment complex that involves children, he calls the managers to allow them to deal with it. It has been 29 years since he got out of jail. He tells me that he has never touched another child, and I have known him for over ten years and believe him. He had been raised by a father who had molested him and had even taught him to prey on others. I count the man a friend, and am glad to be one who helps him to have a path he can walk on semi painlessly, day by day. I have children and grandchildren. I do not ask my neighbor to come join us, unless it is strictly going to be adults. I am of the opinion that to wish for a "cure" is tantamount to wishing someone could stop being themselves. In my book, it is enough to hope that an offender can find a way to live out their lives without harming another person. Wanting them to be something they aren't is as unrealistic as wishing that your friends could all drink booze with you, simply because you aren't an alcoholic, or will offer you candy though they know you are diabetic. Accepting ourselves doesn't have to mean that we let ourselves act in ways that harm others or ourselves. I would hope it to mean that we accept that we aren't perfect, accept that we don't act well under certain circumstances, and protect others and ourselves from harming or being harmed.
