Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Having 2 Gods.

Fantastic post, Jon! You are so right. We would rather see ourselves as worms who deserve to be squashed, than a child of the Most High God who have been forgiven and through Jesus' blood WILL receive mercy once we repent. Praise Him that "He loves mercy more than judgment"!!!

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Wondering if you could get out of the way if a stereo speaker fell from the ceiling at church.

I have more than once thought about what would happen if the speakers fell from the ceiling. I am SOOOO glad to know I am not the only one. I also think about falling off the platform... Unfortunately, our sound room wasn't designed well and we sit precariously perched. :(

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Having a big fight right before church.

Having been married, there was usually more fighting between the husband and I, than the kids and either of us. *sigh* I HATE being late, so I am a get ready early and be prepared kind of person... So, since I've been single with kids, there have been no fights before services. :D The oddest thing was, I (not being a morning person) was grumpy in the morning and cheerful after church (just hearing God's word) and he was fine in the morning and grumpy after church (just being convicted by God's word).

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : #630. Awkward opposite sex friendships.

I guess what I am really trying to say, is when he started talking to her, I very highly doubt that he had ANY intention of starting an emotional affair. I am SURE he just wanted to help a friend in need. One thing led to another. And YES he should have been wise enough to see the signs that things were getting too personal. But, he got his eyes off of God because of losing his job, then he got angrier and angrier at home, and the children and I tried our best to respond with mercy and forgiveness. But, it wasn't enough. SO, I DO agree with you, that opposite sex relationships SHOULD and CAN be fine. They really should be. BUT, there is NOTHING wrong with any one of us erring on the side of caution. Nothing at all.

I can tell you (by his words only), that when he started talking to this girl it was because her husband had left her and she needed rides to work and her grandmother who usually takes her was going to be on vacation. To him, it seemed the most logical thing to do, because I had to go to work, and he was now unemployed with free time on his hands. And I was okay with it, because we WERE doing well at the time (or so I thought) that they started talking again, and I totally trusted him. She then had to move out of her place so she asked my husband if he could help her move. My husband did call me on his way there, to make sure it was okay with me. Even if it weren't okay, now looking back, he was close enough to her by then that he would have done it even if I weren't okay with it.

Thank you for your response. I can tell you, that I DO agree with you... That opposite sex friendships, without more to it, can be perfectly fine and more often than not are quite innocent. I have plenty of friendships with married men in my church. But, I would never go out to coffee with them, or out to lunch, or just have some "chill time". It would be inappropriate (to be alone with them). However, I see nothing wrong with hanging out with them and their wives. I also agree that people don't just "fall into" sin. It is a mind and heart issue first. Part of my thoughts come from the fact that my husband lost his job 1 year ago (4 months after we married) and went "bonkers". He re-started a friendship with a girl from his past and chose to text and call her, and stopped texting and calling me. He even said he was "doing" her when she asked him what he was doing that day. And he thought it was joke, said they were just friends and didn't know what my problem was. Still unemployed, he has left me, is still bonkers and won't talk to me (except to blame me for his problems). However, he still talks with her, texts her and even has her sleeping over his new place. BUT, they are "just friends"! No, I am sorry. There is no such thing as "just friends" when you pick a new woman to be your best friend and put your wife on the back burner. Men AND women CAN cross that "just friends" line. It is better to err on the side of caution. I am NOT saying that men and women can't be friends. What I AM saying is, better safe than sorry.

My best friend's husband cheated on her. Strangely enough, he was cheated on in his previous marriage, so he was the LAST one that anyone thought would cheat. You know how it happened? He was offering a female friend at work advice on her failing marriage. This man was in constant communication with his wife about him helping the co-worker. They got close, and there you go! So, don't judge those who have enough wisdom to know that anything can happen anywhere at anytime with anyone and you never see it coming!

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Holding your church technical team to slightly higher standards than Apple and Steve Jobs.

I find that it helps to pray before starting the service, that God's grace be upon my hands and mind and ears as I work the sound board, Worship Him program and computer. :D After all, it's only by HIS grace that we do what we do. :)

I hear ya, Sarah. Our hymns are still run by numbers, so when a pastor forgets to tell us the page number, or the worship leader doesn't tell us the title of the song, we have to find it and then people turn and look at us because it's not up right away. LOL. I usually feel an inch tall. But, hey! That's good for humility. ;)

Thank you, Jon. I am volunteer sound person at church. I am a support tech, so most people assume I know all things technical. I also have a good ear for music. I figured our current sound guy might need help (if he were sick or had to work on a Sunday), so I volunteered. He doesn't have an ear for music, but he runs wires and fixes jacks, so we are a good team. Neither of us are perfect, so sometimes there are squeals and pops and such. I am glad that Steve Jobs isn't perfect either. ;) Thank you!!!!
