Thanks for your response! I plan to give this a try tonight. I assume that iTunes 10.5 is safe for future jailbreak/unlock needs, correct?

I have an iPhone 4 on iOS version 4.2.1 with baseband 01.59.00. I would like to upgrade to iOS 5. I have no need at this time to jailbreak or unlock. However, when I sell it in about a month, I would like to be able to jailbreak and unlock at that time, for the resale value. If I use redsn0w to create a custom IPSW with iOS 5 and use that to restore in iTunes, will I then be able to later jailbreak and unlock (hopefully with an untethered jailbreak, if one is available at that time)? If I use the custom IPSW from redsn0w without jailbreaking, will I have a tethered boot or is that only if I were to go the next step and actually jailbreak? With the custom IPSW from redsn0w, will I have the issue of the single signal bar that I experienced when I attempted to upgrade above 4.2.1 with Pwnage? Also, will I still be able to downgrade back to 4.2.1 if I prefer (YES, I have my SHSH blobs for 4.2.1 available)?

What a bummer! Is it safe to assume that since the 01.59.00 baseband is not fully compatible with the 4.3 jailbreak that it more than likely will not be compatible with a future 5.0 jailbreak? I maintain my jailbreak and unlock solely for resale value, and I'm thinking that it won't have as much of a resale value if it can't be upgraded. So, I'm trying to decide if I should just do a regular restore and forget about the jailbreak and unlock. I would hate to lose out, though, if there's hope for the future.

A while ago I posted about my issue of losing MMS functionality when upgrading my iPhone 4 from 4.2.1 to 4.3.1 via PwnageTool and unlocking via Ultrasn0w. I'm on AT&T and have the older 01.59.00 baseband. I was instructed to turn off the phone via the power button and swipe rather than respring. So, I restored with my custom IPSW again and made sure I powered off the device that way after installing Ultrasn0w. That did not fix the MMS problem. So, I restored with my 4.2.1 custom IPSW. Since then, I tried 1 more time to upgrade from 4.2.1 to 4.3.1 and another time to upgrade from 4.2.1 to custom 4.3.3. Each time, I installed Ultrasn0w and powered off via the power button and slide to turn off instead of respringing. What am I missing? I've noticed other people reporting the same issues here and in other forums. Is this just a known, unfortunate issue for some people with the older baseband on AT&T? Let me know if you need any other info to help address my issue. Thanks in advance for any assistance anyone is able to provide!

I did both. I clicked the button to Restart Springboard and then once that completed, I powered down normally. I did not realize that I should not press the button to restart springboard. I re-installed 4.2.1 last night, but I'm eager to install 4.3.1 again and install Ultrasn0w without pressing the Restart Springboard button. Thanks for letting me know! I did not realize that this is what the instructions meant.

I have an iPhone 4 on modem firmware 01.59.00. I just upgraded to 4.3.1 via Pwnage 4.3 and installed Ultrasn0w 1.2.1. I'm on official AT&T in the US and only installed Ultrasn0w to fix the signal bar issue. However, I'm now unable to send and receive MMS. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

I keep seeing conflicting information on whether or not I need to downgrade iTunes to 9.1.1 since I'm on 9.2. You said it worked for you on 9.2? Thanks for confirming that I'll be able to restore to stock 3.1.3 if necessary for future jailbreaking and upgrading purposes. Yes, it's a bummer that it's the old bootrom. My sister had to exchange her phone with Apple and this is what they gave her.

I just was hoping someone could verify a few things for me before I attempt to jailbreak and unlock this device. The device specs are below. If I understand correctly, I'll need to downgrade iTunes to 9.1.1, then use Spirit jailbreak, and then use Ultrasn0w via Cydia. Is this correct? Also, if I do this, will I later be able to restore to stock 3.1.3 (I have the SHSH) if the iPhone Dev Team comes out with a jailbreak that works on this device as an upgrade path to 4.0? Thanks! iPhone 3Gs iOS: 3.1.3 (7E18) Model: MB718LL Serial Number: 5K004...... Modem Firmware: 05.12.01 iBoot: 359.3.2 SHSH Saved: 3.1.3, 4.0 iTunes: 9.2

Yes, it was a refurbished model that Apple used to replace one my sister brought to them with a problem. That's why I was hoping there was a chance it had the old bootrom. However, I just put it into DFU to check, and unfortunately it is the new one iBoot-359.3.2. Thanks for the help both of you. It looks like a Spirit jailbreak is the only option. Correct?

I have an iPhone 3Gs with the following: iPhone 3Gs iOS: 3.1.3 (7E18) Baseband: 05.12.01 Bootloader: 6.4 Model: MB718LL Serial Number: 5K004...... I want to definitively know whether or not it has the old or new bootrom. From what I know and read, the only way to do this is to put the phone into DFU mode. If I do put it into DFU mode, how do I get the phone out of DFU mode when I'm done? I've had trouble doing this in the past. Thanks for your help!

i have an iPhone 3Gs running 3.1.3 and the stock baseband 05.12.01. It is currently NOT jailbroken. I have my 3.1, 3.1.2, and 3.1.3 SHSH files on Cydia. I would like to upgrade to 4.0 but would also like the option to jailbreak and unlock it in the future when I sell it. Is it better to wait until the dev team releases the jailbreak for 4.0? Or since I don't need the jailbreak right now, is it ok to go ahead and upgrade to stock 4.0 since I have my SHSH files saved? Thanks for your advice!

I have an iPhone 3Gs that was previously jailbroken. A few days ago, it started having problems. It displays the Pineapple logo and every few minutes reboots. When it reboots, it shows the Pineapple logo again. When it's doing this, no computer will recognize it. I've verified this by looking at the USB port information, and it does not see the iPhone. When I put it into DFU mode, the computer will recognize it. When I get it out of DFU, it goes back to just cycling through the Pineapple screen and again the computer won't recognize it. What can I do? I only have 3.1.3 shsh's stored. Here are the other stats on this phone. iPhone 3Gs, Version 3.1.2, Modem Firmware 05.11.07 Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

What's the best way to clean out the content of a jailbroken and unlocked iphone? Will restoring from a backup created for another jailbroken and unlocked iPhone work? We just unlocked an iPhone that was at 3.1.2 and previously used by an AT&T customer so that a Tmobile customer could use it. However, we would like to clean out the content and settings as much as possible without jeopardizing the jailbreak and unlock as the 3.1.2 shsh is NOT saved for this device.
