My previous comment was too long to fit them, so have some honorable mentions, too. Honorable Mentions: These are highly regarded stories within the fandom, but I don't think they've really made enough of a splash to be considered "must-reads." - The Sweetie Chronicles: Fragments. A truly spectacular undertaking featuring Sweetie Belle magically traveling between the worlds of various fanfics. This story is a recommendation tool in and of itself, since you'll definitely want to read each fanfic before reading the chapter based on it. - Upheaval. I'd say this one is second only to Dangerous Business in terms of worldbuilding muscle, and it's probably the most realistically-conceived warfic in the fandom. - The Immortal Game (formerly known as Ponies Make War). Probably the most popular warfic in the fandom. Unfortunately seems to have stalled on the home stretch, though. - CRISIS: Equestria. An epic alternate-universe adventure fic that I think might be best described as "The Lord of the Rings as a shōnen anime series starring the mane cast of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic." It also includes what I personally consider the best treatment of the "Elements of Discord" trope in the fandom. The plot does take a while to pick up, but there are some fairly massive payoffs later on. And yes, I do have more. Many, many more. I was not exaggerating when I said I could go on for hours, as a friend of mine can attest. No one recommends reading Fallout: Equestria for the same reason no one recommends watching Star Wars; everyone just assumes you've done it already. That . . . probably says something significant. In any case, you asked for it, so here's another batch of recs, these being the stories I personally consider to be the fandom "classics"; stories that made some sort of significant impact in the fandom. Fallout: Equestria and Eternal are on this list, along with a few you mentioned, so I'll skip those, but here are the rest, in no particular order: - Fallout: Equestria - Project Horizons. A spinoff of Fallout: Equestria that takes the tropes used and turns them up to . . . seventeen or so. Considered by a not-insignificant number of readers to be better than the original. - It's a Dangerous Business, Going Out Your Door. Basically an enormous homage/love letter to The Lord of the Rings in the form of a pony fanfic. Quite possibly the best work of worldbuilding in the fandom. - Anthropology. The most recent addition to this list. This is the fic that codified Lyra's popular "human-obsessed" characterization, and is, according to FIMFiction, the most widely-read Lyra fic in the fandom. - Allegrezza. THE Vinyl Scratch/Octavia shipping fic. Codified most of the VSO tropes and most of the fanon characterizations for both characters. - Through the Eyes of Another Pony. Almost certainly the most popular HiE (Human in Equestria) fic in the fandom. Notable for, somehow, using every hackneyed, clichéd HiE trope in existence, but doing so in such a way that they're completely awesome. - On a Cross and Arrow. Also known as "the Rule 63 fic." - The Life and Times of a Winning Pony. The central and eponymous (heh heh, eponymous) story of the Winningverse, a fan continuity centered around the background ponies Cloud Kicker and Blossomforth. The story is a truly impressive work of both character- and world-building, and the Winningverse is thus far arguably the most successful collabrative fan continuity outside of the one that sprung up around Fallout: Equestria (which, let's face it, can't even be measured on the same scale as anything else). Do note that you'll probably want to read The Incredibly Dense Mind of Rainbow Dash first, though, as it immediately precedes the events of Life and Times. - Progress. Almost certainly the most popular pre-season 2 Luna fanfic, and established several of the more well-known fandom in-jokes, most notably Luna's abacus. - Vinyl and Octavia: University Days. I held back from adding this one the first time I made this list, as I was trying to restrict it to stories that were very, very widely read or had made some kind of significant contribution to the fandom, not just stuff that I liked. Given the sheer number of musical tributes this fic has inspired, though (more than any other outside the Fallout: Equestria fanverse, if I'm not mistaken), it's obviously earned a spot. This is another VSO story, this one in a more modern-day college setting, and reads like a well-written CW series. That isn't meant to be any kind of backhanded compliment, by the way; this is one of my absolute favorite fics in the fandom.

Finally, somepony who understands how to ask for a recommendation. I've definitely got some for you. You didn't mention it, so first things first: Fallout: Equestria. There is a reason it is widely regarded as the best work of fiction ever produced by this fandom, and you owe it to yourself to find out why if you haven't already. Next, Project: Sunflower. This one just finished up a few days ago, and is the best HiE story I've ever read, bar none. Hell, it's one of the best stories I've read, period. And I've read a lot. The Flight of the Alicorn also recently finished up—just today, in fact—with one of the most satisfying endings I've ever seen. Just one more for now—Eternal. Quite possibly one of the only stories in the fandom that's arguably more of an emotional roller coaster than Background Pony. You think I'm joking. I'm not. Do let me know if you'd like more, I could seriously go on for hours.

Harwick's correct as far as the first story goes, but the sequel, Earth & Sky, also has Caramel/Pinkie Pie, Pipsqueak/Apple Bloom, and Soarin'/Applejack, and it's looking like Braeburn/Rainbow Dash might happen too. The thing to note is that the romances definitely aren't the main focus of the story, just one part of it.

Write a story, post it on FIMFiction, get feedback from your readers, repeat until you're confident enough in your work, make sure your story meets the EqD submission guidelines, submit it, wait for the prereaders to get back to you, if they rejected it, incorporate their suggestions and resubmit. If you get three strikes, the story will no longer be considered for submission, so pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and try again. That's pretty much all there is to it. The hard part is step 1: Write a story. Do that and the rest will come.
