Big Government : Gov. Walker Reacts to Big Labor's Massive Defeat in Wisconsin

MASSIVE DEFEAT???????????????? Good grief, people, can you COUNT? The Republicans LOST two seats yesterday and, the best news for people of common decency, is that the BIG CITIES in the state DID NOT VOTE yesterday. We are just sitting back waiting for the big fish, the governor himself, early next year. This man will not only be a ONE TERM GOVERNOR, he will be a ONE YEAR GOVERNOR. That, my friends, will be a MASSIVE DEFEAT. Can't wait.

The best Billie Holiday song---the best rendition ever of this song--You Go to My Head....not to be missed. When you listen, you listen--whatever you are doing when the song starts, you stop and simply listen. Heaven is in the air while she sings this song.

Big Hollywood : Top 25 Left-Wing Films: #20 - 'Fahrenheit 9/11' (2004)

Beautifully made films are beautifully made films made by people we may not agree with just as there are truly extraordinary writers whom we may not agree with but who certainly can write. Perhaps BH readers who do not appreciate John's list should get out a little more and consider the fact that enjoying quality work of any kind is a gift. Consider Billie Holiday. In her time she was a "black singer" who lived with all of the prejudices and restrictions of her time. Was that right? Of course not. Her talent will live forever. So it is with other work of genius-like it or not BH readers, real talent, true gifts exist way behind rants and raves and prejudice.

Big Hollywood : Hollywood Screenwriter Famous For Enjoying Drugs Angry at Palin for Enjoying the Hunt

John, John, John...how do you know that hunting an animal is not torture? Did this crazy woman actually club a halibut to death? For "sport" on television? Not for food but for ratings that, incidentally, keep falling? This is worse than what Michael Vick did. And Michael Vick is in the careful and so far extraordinarily successful process of redeeming himself with talent (remember, Michael Vick actually can DO something) and hard work. In addition he is supported by Tony Dungy, one of the most highly respected men in this country. Can you show me ONE person with the ethical standing of Tony Dungy who would touch Sarah Palin with a 10" pole? I didn't think so. I wish that everyone would weary of Sarah Palin and her family freak show. But, like freak shows in any circus, everyone must pass by at least once before returning to a meaningful life.

Well said! I wish I had been there that Thanksgiving night in '74. I am old enough to remember "the beginning" here in the US. In fact when we new my father was dying in February of 1964, I sat outside in a cold Wisconsin winter to listen to them on what was called a "portable radio." I was all of 20 and their music took away the pain. What more can we ask of our artists?

Big Hollywood : Announcing: Big Hollywood's Countdown of the Top 25 Greatest Left-Wing Films

Wow, John, you really have people trying to think here. Good for you! I can't wait to see your list. I can't think of a single movie I have ever thought was blatantly "left-wing" as I am never bothered by any "messages", good or bad, in the movies I love. I do agree with you about the differences between liberal and left-wing. Thank you for discussing that. It takes a good bit of intelligence to understand those "fine points" . Can't wait to start counting down.

Big Hollywood : You Destroy Art By Qualifying Everything as Art

Once again, a beautifully written and reasoned entry, John Nolte. The California mission are very important to me and I was once privileged to tour one with people very dear to me. The entire story of the missions' foundings and the extraordinary bravery and devotion of the fathers who built them is art itself. The beauty of the work at the altars and artwork in the churches is almost heartbreaking when one considers the conditions under which they were created. Especially moving and beautiful are the stations of the cross created by mission Indians in the Mission San Gabriel founded in 1771--before our forefathers got their act together. Art, for me, must be moving and created with passion fueled by love or devotion or even by jealousy--some true human emotion. Black and white squares? Not worth the effort to open my eyes never mind my mind. Thank you, Mister Nolte, for another fine article. And thank you for the photos. They are beautiful.

Big Hollywood : 'Lombardi' Review: The Legend and His Values Arrive on Broadway

My son will remember a lot of screaming on Sundays in our home, too. It was all about the Packers. David Maraniss's book is outstanding--captures Lombardi, his teams, and family. It sounds as if this play might even be better. We live between two NFL cities--if the play, with Lauria and Light, come our way, we will see it twice. A heartbreaking scene in the book may not be in the play but revealed to me more about where our society headed than anything else. By the time Lombardi was on his way to the Redskins, still an inexplicable move as far as I'm concerned, he was very ill with cancer. He and his wife took the train to DC. Maraniss recounts that Marie Lombardi strugged to get her husband and luggage through the station. No one helped them. My daughter-in-law owns the most extensive Green Bay Packer wardrobe in the world. I hope I can join her for the opening "Lombardi" in Green Bay itself! Perhaps she will lend me a jersey.

Big Hollywood : Film Review: Political Advocacy Done Right with 'The Kids Are All Right'

Beautifully written and yes, you are right. All studies have shown that same-sex parenting has no more deleterious effect on kids than heterosexual parenting. So...there is nothing wrong with that. And...the kids are all right and so are we. As far as the "moral" component of same-sex marriage is concerned, in the eyes of the law in this country we have a separation between church (the home of "moral component"s) and state. Marriage is a legal construct. If your church does not want to have a ceremony recognizing a couple's legal marriage, no problem. However, that church or any church cannot and should not stand in the way of a marriage. Remember, your moral leader must be licensed by the state in order to perform marriages. It is not required that he or she be licensed to perform any other religious act. There is a reason for that. Again, marriage is a legal construct. If a couple wishes that their marriage also be recognized by a church, so be it. I have been married for 33 years and we never saw or wanted to see the inside of a church. A judge in Rockford, Illinois, did very nicely, thank you, and I am as married as you are. So, please, recognize these differences and celebrate wonderful families like the ones shown in the film and get out of the way of the thousands and thousands of other couples who wish to be, who will work hard to be, just like them.

Big Government : Why Democrats are Pushing the $165 Billion Union Pension Bailout

Hello, folks, have you taken one second to think about who actually benefits from a situation like this? It is BIG BUSINESS when pension obligations are removed from corporate finances. It is those horrid people who get big bonuses who will benefit the most. This bill is not a labor bill; it is a corporation bailout bill most likely lobbied for by big business.
