To make sure the city has an idea on how to run, put out to bid, or partner with another company to provide telecom services? I don't understand how this is unreasonable. If you ask anyone from the city, their answer is, we need to pass it and we'll figure out all of the other stuff after. In my opinion you don't just pass something to pass it. Let's prove it'll be a benefit before deciding to pass this. I also have a problem with government getting involved in something that should be left to the private sector... but that's just me. This is a case of government picking winners and losers in the telecom business here in our community. I don't know about you, but the wifi system RidgeviewTel has put up around the city is terrible! Their service is below par. To give any company preferential treatment over another is WRONG, especially when they've proved their incompetence as a provider. Anytime government gets involved a product is generally less efficient and more costly. Competition is great, but don't we already have competition among Comcast, Quest (or whatever they're called these days), Direct TV and Dish network. Regardless of where you stand on the issue, the fact is that the city by law isn't allowed to use our tax dollars to promote the passage of an issue. One of the "Pro" speakers in the room was a representative from RidgeviewTel. Why is RidgeviewTel so eager to see this measure passed? As I understand it they already have the contract to run the city services. But the Mayor and so many others said this project will go out to bid... I'd like to know if the city has any intention of truly bidding out the service or if the decision was already made in a smoke filled room comprised of politicians and the "higher ups" of RidgeviewTel. Something doesn't smell right here. City Council and Mayor Baum are certainly a little cosy with Ridgeview.
