Longmont Times-Call : Telecom group has given $75,000 to beat Longmont Issue 2A - Longmont Times-Call

Government should be worried about fixing pot holes and running schools, not getting into a business venture. A lot of cities who have tried this around the country have failed and the tax payers have been on the hook for the debt. I don't think this is an appropriate venture for government.

Longmont Times-Call : Longmont rally planned in support of "Occupy Wall Street" protests - Longmont Times-Call

So someone can't commute to grad school and happen to have a job in the same place, and commute back to Longmont - you're right that's impossible! I must be being paid by big bad corporations! Bill I only hope to get employed after finishing my grad degree. As a young republican and a conservative gal, I am utterly opposed to government getting involved in things that should be left to the private sector. The private sector is always cheaper and more efficient than government run anything PERIOD

#1 this is an important issue that's clearly limited government versus government run enterprises. #2 my last name's not Cullen.. Haven't you ever seen Twlight? If you had you'd understand - it's not like your using your real name either.

Phil, I don't understand this, "let's pass 2A and we can figure out how to do it afterwords" lack of a plan. Don't you think the city outta put together a plan, present it to the people and then ask for their vote? Giving future City Councils the control of a telecom business is extremely dangerous without a plan. Phil, let me ask you something... Doesn't this sound like when Nancy Pelosi was trying to convince Congress to pass Obamacare? She said, let's pass it, then we can figure out what's in it, read it and figure out how to implement it. Maybe it's a good idea, but I would like to the city to put together a plan, is that so much to ask? To make sure the city has an idea on how to run, put out to bid, or partner with another company to provide telecom services? I don't understand how this is unreasonable. If you ask anyone from the city, their answer is, we need to pass it and we'll figure out all of the other stuff after. In my opinion you don't just pass something to pass it. Let's prove it'll be a benefit before deciding to pass this. I also have a problem with government getting involved in something that should be left to the private sector... but that's just me. Perhaps notions of limited government our dead in our community.

rmodesi, Who is behind the the pro- 2A campaign? Vincent Jordan the CEO of RidgeviewTel! I think we as voters should be aware of the cozy relationship the city has with another private company. I cannot believe this situation. This is a case of government picking winners and losers in the telecom business here in our community. I don't know about you, but the wifi system RidgeviewTel has put up around the city is terrible! Their service is below par. To give any company preferential treatment over another is WRONG, especially when they've proved their incompetence as a provider.

Longmont Times-Call : Anti-2A group claims city pushing \'propaganda\' - Longmont Times-Call

This argument really comes down to do we as a community wanted government involved in things that should remain in the private sector? Anytime government gets involved a product is generally less efficient and more costly. Competition is great, but don't we already have competition among Comcast, Quest (or whatever they're called these days), Direct TV and Dish network. I really don't see the value in the city getting involved in this enterprise.

communitynets you're missing the point here. Regardless of whether or not you agree with the "Vote No" people as you called them. It's wrong and illegal for the city to use taxpayer dollars on propaganda. Yes or no?

raider6704 you're missing the point. The point is that the City of Longmont is using our tax dollars on these brocheures, which in all honesty do look like propaganda. Regardless of where you stand on the issue, the fact is that the city by law isn't allowed to use our tax dollars to promote the passage of an issue. The City of Longmont doesn't have the right to do this.

Longmont Times-Call : Longmont fiber optic issue supporters pound at out-of-town opponents - Longmont Times-Call

I'd like to raise a question. One of the "Pro" speakers in the room was a representative from RidgeviewTel. Why is RidgeviewTel so eager to see this measure passed? As I understand it they already have the contract to run the city services. But the Mayor and so many others said this project will go out to bid... I'd like to know if the city has any intention of truly bidding out the service or if the decision was already made in a smoke filled room comprised of politicians and the "higher ups" of RidgeviewTel. Something doesn't smell right here. City Council and Mayor Baum are certainly a little cosy with Ridgeview.
